I close my eyes and flip my board.Tacos. I hear Team Groom celebrate.

“Tacos.” Athena confirms. “Team Groom gets a point.”

He remembered. I smile. Maybe we know more about one another than I’m giving us credit for. But let’s not get ahead of ourselves. I sit up straighter in my seat.

“Cate, darling,” Athena smiles at me. “What is the first meal Theo cooked for you?”

I know this one! I know this one!

I scribbleThanksgiving Dinneron my board and sit back in my chair.

“Show us your answers.” We flip our boards on Athena’s command and Team Bride screams in delight. “Team Bride gets a point.”

I exhale a sigh of relief. We might just pull this off. I have gotten two right already. My last question can’t be that hard, but I don’t want to jinx myself.

“Theo, does Cate have any tattoos?”

My eyes widen. How is he supposed to know that? But if he doesn’t, then they’ll know we haven’t seen each other …. naked. I don’t have any tattoos. I am afraid of needles.

I writeNo Tattooson my board and hope and pray he guesses right.

“This one should be easy for you two, huh?” Tess roars, the widest grin across her face. If only she knew this one was the toughest yet.

“Contessa,” Athena tsks and wags a finger at her daughter. “Now, flip your boards.”

I hold my breath. I can feel Theo flip his board and based on his breathing, he seems sure of himself. I flip my board.

Team Groom claps and high fives. He got it right, thank God.

“No tattoos. Team Groom gets another point.” Athena paces back and forth in front of Theo and me. “Now these are our last two questions. Whoever gets this question right, wins the game. If there is a tie, we will have to go into a tie breaker round.”

Theo and I nod. We’re ready. This is it.

“Cate, darling, what is Theo’s biggest fear?”

Team Groom groans, they know it’s an easy question. And I actually know the right answer. I smile and writeTheo is afraid of heights.

Theo flips his board before Athena even gets a chance to tell us to. He knows I got it right. So, I flip my board around too. Team Bride erupts. I have gotten all three of my questions right. I breathe a sigh of relief.

“Last question,” Athena lowers her voice to make it dramatic. “Theo, where did you kiss Cate for the very first time?”

I feel his back muscles tense behind me.

Hellfire and broomsticks. This. Is. Bad.

What is Theo going to write? He can’t write the truth.

I am sweating like a pig. My stomach is in knots, and I am short of breath. Out of all the questions Athena could have asked, why was it where our first kiss was. If they find out we literally just kissed for the first time a couple of hours ago, they will be demanding to know why we’ve been dating for several months and have not kissed until now.

My eyes are blurry. I hear myself whisper, “Water,” just before I hit the ground and all I see is darkness.

Chapter Fourteen

My hands reach out and feel the soft, luxurious sheets of the bed in my hotel suite. I open my eyes and see the wooden leaf fan is spinning lazily above me.

What happened?

All I remember is Theo being asked where we first kissed, and I freaked out. I rub a hand over my face and moan. I fainted. In front of everyone. Hopefully, they chalk it up to me being overheated and not me being terrified of being outed as the fraud that I am.
