“Contessa, my make-up won’t do itself.” Athena sings but it sounds more like a threat than a song.

“Alright, alright.” Tess walks over to Athena. “I’ll do what I can. I make no promises.”

Athena swats at Tess’s arm. “I give birth to you, and this is the thanks I get. Sarcasm.”

I hear my phone ping and I dig into the pocket of my shorts to see who text me. Happy day, bless my soul, it’s Eve. I forget about Athena and Tess bickering for a second and swipe at my screen opening Eve’s message.

Eve: So, are you two announcing your engagement soon? Because I just bought the most gorgeous red dress and need somewhere to wear it.

Cate: Ma, I’m starting to panic.

Eve: What’s wrong, Kit Kat?

Cate: I think I’m falling for Theo and I’m already full blown in love with his family and they’re going to find out this whole thing is fake and then they’re going to hate me forever.

Eve: Woah, slow down, Kit Kat. Do you know how Theo feels?

Cate: I don’t know.

Eve: Well, have you asked him?

Cate: No.

Eve: Have you kissed yet?

Cate: MA!

Eve: I’ll take that as a yes. Tommy Thai owes me $5.

Cate: This is serious, Eve.

Eve: Damn. Using my actual name means you’re about to do something rash.

Cate: Eve!

Eve: Take a deep breath, Churro. You need to ask Theo how he feels.

Cate: What if he says he doesn’t feel the same way? Then I’ll be stuck here pretending until our flight home tomorrow.

Eve: First of all, if he doesn’t feel the same way, it’s his loss. Second, you are not a tree, Kit Kat, you’re never stuck.

Cate: I miss you, Ma.

Eve: Miss you too. It’s truly a wonder I haven’t killed Tommy while you’ve been gone.

Cate: I miss him. I even miss that naked mole rat of yours.

Eve: Don’t disrespect Mr. Whiskers like that! Kit, Kat, I got to go. Next flight is about to board. And don’t chicken out. Ask Theo how he feels. Then tell me what he says so I know if I need to stock the apartment with “happy treats” or “we hate men treats”. Love you!

I smile as I put my phone back in my pocket. Eve’s right. I should just ask Theo how he feels. The worst thing that happens is he says he doesn’t feel the same way, crushing my soul, and sending me on another Cheeto binge.

I shake my head.Happy thoughts. Think happy thoughts.

“What about you, Cate?”

Sarah’s voice cuts through my self-doubt and deprecating thoughts and I am left speechless because I have no idea what the ladies are talking about or why they are all staring at me.

“I…” I clear my throat, fighting the temptation to gnaw at my fingers. “I’m sorry. I was texting my roommate. What are we talking about?”
