“It just explains a lot.”

“Like what?”

“Can I get you two another round of coffee?” The sweet waitress smiles down on us, and I am more than grateful for the interruption. I always seem to put my foot in my mouth given the opportunity.

Theo looks across at me, waiting to see if I’ll order another drink. To see if I’ll spend more time talking to him. I bob my head.

“Maybe one more.”

“Same for me.” He smiles at me, even though he is talking to her.

As soon as she jots down the order and scurries off to the counter, I attempt to steer the conversation in a different direction, but he shakes his head.

“Oh no, you’re not getting off that easy. What did you mean by me being a middle child explains a lot?”

I shake my head, hoping he will let this go, but he crosses his arms across his chest, and I can see the outline of muscles under his long sleeve shirt.

“My eyes are up here, Catalina.” He points at his face with two fingers, and I want to curl up in a corner and die of embarrassment.

“I thought you were only going to use my full name if you were happy or upset,” I croak, mirroring him by crossing my arms over my ample sized chest.

“Maybe I am.”

“Maybe you are what?”

“Happy or upset.”

“Which one is it?”

“We’ll see after you answer the question.”

I can see he isn’t going to let this die a peaceful death, so I exhale a deep, exasperated breath and proceed. “You seem somewhat rebellious, and although you love your family, you are not willing to be honest with them to spare their feelings which tells me you care about their opinion more than your own happiness. You talk about your siblings as if they are better than you, so it seems as if you feel overshadowed by them. You also stick to your own agenda and maybe aren’t recognized for your accomplishments the way you’d like them to be.”

He blinks over at me three times in a row as silent as a mouse.

Hell.

“Too much?”

“Wow.”

“I…I’m sorry… I didn’t mean to offend you. Sometimes I say things I shouldn’t -”

“Don’t apologize. It’s crazy you picked up on all of that in the,” he checks his watch before saying, “thirty minutes of us knowing each other.”

“Well, I’m still sorry if I said something -”

“I’m not upset, Catalina. I promise.” He’s smiling at me like a kid on Christmas morning and I’m not sure why. So true to fashion I ask him.

“What? Why are you looking at me like that?”

“Can’t I just smile at you?”

“No.” I frown.

“Why not?” He cocks his head to the side.

Does this man not have a bad angle?
