As I gazed at the water, memories flooded back to me. The story of the cenote as the gateway to the Underground. I remembered asking Nona about it, but she brushed it off as a farce, a made-up story. I believed her, as I believed many of the things she told me. Her stories had come true, just like the warning she had given me about the Goblin King who had whisked me away at night.

My attention shifted back to the water. The bright moonbeams filtered down through the dense trees, casting an ethereal glow on the serene water. The grotto was aglow with the light of the fireflies that flickered around, making the place seem and feel surreal. I couldn't help but be drawn to the tranquil waters before me, a little piece of paradise amidst all the chaos of my life.

I slipped off one of my slippers and dipped my toes into the water, feeling the warmth emanating from it as if it was heated by a forbidden magic. My muscles ached and yearned for a warm bath to ease the pain and calm my mind. I couldn't resist any longer and stripped down to my chemise, ready to immerse myself in the peaceful waters.

I stepped into the water slowly, testing the depth with cautious movements. The rocky bottom of the cenote felt stable under my feet. Although I wasn't the best swimmer, the warm water embraced me as I waded deeper, submerging me up to my chest. It felt like an old lover's embrace, its warmth filling my lungs before I dipped below the surface.

I swam towards the center of the cenote, my only company being the night sky as I floated weightlessly in the dark grotto. The chirping of crickets and the hum of trees created a soothing melody that filled my soul, making me feel at peace. I closed my eyes, letting the sounds carry me away.

It wasn't until the trees' melody and the crickets' chirping faded away that a sense of unease crept overt me. The alarm bells in my head went off, and I opened my eyes, dipping lower into the water. I scanned the edges of the rock, looking for any sign of what had disturbed my peaceful swim. That's when I saw him- on the edge of the cenote, watching from within the trees. His eyes glowed in the darkness, and the branches seemed to caress his shoulders, as if beckoning him forward.

I felt a tendril of shadow seep from his fingers, twirling around him like a serpent, and I couldn't help but marvel at this magnificent creature. This male I had encountered over and over. My heart raced as I gazed at him, frozen in fear and fascination. The longer I stared, the more the tendrils of darkness seemed to grow, as if taunting me to come closer.

Stepping forward into the light of the moon, into the lights of the fireflies, his gaze never left mine. His long hair pulled back into a bun to reveal the column of his neck. My core heated as I stared. A wave of lust washing over me. The need to have him coursing through my body. I did not want to admit it, but he was a sight to behold. His bare chest stark against his dark trousers.

Every muscle rippled along his arms, his chest, his legs. I felt my cheeks flush as he stopped at the edge, his fingers undoing the tops of his trousers. I wanted to watch, oh did I want to watch as he slipped them off but the voice inside my head screamed at me to look away.

Closing my eyes I turned, waiting for the sound of the water as he splashed into it. Turning around to him again, but he had disappeared. Spinning around, looking for him, he resurfaced a few feet away. The water dripping off of him. His eyes alight with mischief and need.Slowly he swam toward me, our gazes never leaving each other’s. When he was close enough, his hand found mine. It was cold, his fingers intertwining through mine as he pulled me to him. Where I expected warmth, I was met with chills.

His chest was like ice.

“You’re cold.” My voice came out in a whisper, cracking slightly. The chill of his skin under the palms of my hands caused me to look down, he was naked. The hardness of him pushing against my leg. I was very aware at that moment that my chemise did not cover anything. It was as sheer as gossamer in the water.

My cheeks flushed again.

He cocked his head to the side but did not speak. Instead, lifting my chin to meet his gaze. His lips found mine. It was soft, tender, but it wasn’t right. He demanded more, pulling me closer still. Another wave of lust, need, and want coursed through me. Whatever magic this was, it was the worst kind. Temptation, seduction, demand. All together forming a spell over my senses. I couldn’t help myself as I wrapped my legs around his waist. His hands found my hips, holding me there.

Oh, this was not good.

I knew this would not be good, what was Idoing? I had no control over my senses. Over my own body.

The kiss deepened as his tongue forced itself past my lips, my heart slamming away in my chest. A rush of heat coursing through my core. The magic this creature was extruding had a firm grip on me. For as much as I wanted it to stop, Ididn’tat all. I wanted more, more. . .more.

His hands pushed my soaked chemise up, my thighs bare to his palms. My breasts peaked from the chill, sensitive against the wet fabric. Even as they brushed along the hard planes of his chest.

A cold chill ran down my spine.

My fear caused more alarms in my head to go off. Part of me knew this was not who I thought it was. That I should be trying to get away. But the other part of me wanted to stay because it wanted more. Drunk on lust, and need, wanting him. All of him. Another wave slammed into me. My fingers found themselves tangled in his bun, pulling it loose as the wet strands fell down past his shoulders.

He broke our kiss briefly to nibble at my neck, his tongue running down the column of my throat as he carried me toward the edge. I would allow him to take me there. Unable to stop him. I would allow him to strip the wet fabric from my skin and taste me from head to toe. Allow his teeth to nib down in any soft and tender spot as he found his way between my legs. I would allow him to enter me, take me hard and fast. Because the magic told me to. Because it would coerce me to.

His lips parted mine again as his tongue entered to mingle with mine. But this was not the Goblin King, this was not the kiss I remembered from the Caves of Desire. But that was just a dream, my mind could have made up any scenario. Maybe he was cold, maybe he had no warmth to him. No, that wasn’t true, his touch lit a fire under my skin. His touch caused me to burn, caused everything to burn.

Whatever, whoeverthis was, did no such thing. Not in the way that felt right.

I quickly recoiled from him, feeling a sense of panic wash over me. I desperately wanted to escape from this creature and make my way to the safety of the edge of the cenote where my clothes lay. But his grip on me only grew tighter, his sneer deepening as his sharp teeth were revealed. I shuddered at the thought of those teeth sinking into my flesh. As I struggled against him, I could feel the water around us churning and rippling with our movements. His claws dug into my skin, causing small droplets of blood to fall into the water. I couldn't help but let out a small cry of pain.

Desperation coursed through my veins, my mind raced for a way to defend myself. Without thinking, I raised my fist and punched him square in the face. The impact of my knuckles connecting with his flesh echoed through the night air. He let out a shrill cry, its hands flying up to its nose as it stumbled backwards.

For a moment, I was frozen in shock at what I had just done. I was momentarily stunned by my own actions. I had never hit anyone before. But I couldn't afford to dwell on it. I had to get away. I turned and ran towards the edge of the waters, I was so close,so close. Tears stung my eyes as I fled, the fear and adrenaline making it hard to see where I was going.

The sound of rippling water reached my ears, causing me to freeze in place and turn towards the source.

I couldn't believe what I was seeing. The creature that was once before me had transformed into something beyond my worst nightmares. Its eyes, now a chilling yellow and black, seemed to pierce through me. It’s fangs elongated, now sharp and menacing as its tongue slithered out like a serpent- flicking through the air with a forked tip. The sight of the creature and its magic held me in a trance-like state. Was it fear or desire that made my body shake uncontrollably? I wasn't sure, but I knew that I had to break free from its hold.

My heart was racing as I gasped for breath- my eyes locked on the creature. It seemed to hesitate for a moment, perhaps considering its next move. I quickly surveyed my surroundings, searching for any possible escape route. The moonlit water was behind me, and the dense woods offered no clear path to safety. The creature was still coming for me, now more grotesque and distorted than before, its movements unpredictable. I knew I had to act fast if I wanted to survive.

Once more, the creature reached out for me with clammy hands that felt as cold as death. But as it did, I couldn't help but notice that something was different. Its form was changing, contorting into a grotesque shape with a sickly green tint. The smooth, pale skin that had once resembled the Goblin King was cracking and falling away, revealing the true monster beneath.
