We are sisters, though

You cannot escape me.

Freewill is my Enemy,

But balanced between us.

I will not give up on you,

Even if you delay me.

What am I?”

I felt the groan in the back of my throat, the disheartened feeling as it finished. After everything I had done so far, with how far I had come, a riddle was going to stop me. But I thought over the words, trying to piece them together. I should never have hoped that this would be easy.

Why would it have been?

“Take all the time you need, I am in no hurry.” the sphinx said, picking up the fish. It lounged on the rock, the fish in its paws.

It may not have been in a hurry, but I was.

The words of the riddle wove around in my head. I’m never changing, woven into destiny, we’re sisters. What did that mean? You cannot escape me, free will is my enemy. But balanced between us?

Well, one could define Freewill as every action and all of its consequences can be individually determined and that the results of those actions is entirely dependent upon the choice that is made by someone. But it is an enemy to what? I will not give up on you, even if you delay me.

What could it be?

I hated riddles, hatedthem. But it did not stop me as I considered the riddle for a while. Even with the time I sat there thinking about it- honestly I could have turned around and gone back to the fork in the road. I caught sight of the sphinx again, It was sunbathing its eyes closed. If I didn’t know any better I would have guessed it was sleeping. I wanted to take my chances but I dared not try to sneak past it for fear of the consequences I could possibly incur.

My mind stirred, causing me to ponder deeply.Consequences.

The thought of it sent shivers down my spine. Every decision, every action, had an outcome. Although people held the power of free will, they could not outrun their destiny. It was a force that held sway over their lives, whether they liked it or not. Destiny was woven with. . .

“Fate. The answer is fate.” The words came flying from my lips as the sphinx opened an eye. I felt a small sense of pride and relief as it looked at me. A smile spread across my face as I stood there watching.

“Ah...very good Serra. There is hope for you. You will do well. Welcome home, Child of Starlight.”

I beamed for a second before its words sunk in. The term it used as it stared back at me. Wait. . . what? “I’m sorry, you must be confused.”

It stood as it spoke, stepping forward. It took everything in me to not step back in fear. “I am many things, but confused is not one of them.”

“I don’t understand.” That seemed to be the joke here, the theme of this adventure. Let’s see how much Serra cannot understand and how crazy it makes her. It was unfair.

“Have you not noticed the world around you? What your presence here is doing?” Its eyes watched my face. When I did not answer it went on. “The land is awakening. It is reviving. It’s pulling what it needs fromyou, have you never wondered why the world bloomed around you? Why the birds, animals, and plants are attracted to you? Consider it for a moment.”

It cocked its head at me, contemplating. “No, I suppose you do not. Curious. I cannot see past... that is strange indeed. I see you, I see him. . . But I do not see. . . Ah. . . there.”

It laughed at itself, the sound was terrifying.

What did it mean? What did it see?

My words came out shaky, “What do you mean?”

“Hmm. . . it was predicted that you would return. A savior. You're to shine brightly. Your fate was foretold. The threads woven long before your birth. But your thread was not woven alone. No, it lies with another. Together they are tied. Do not run from your destiny. . . human, but not.”

More riddles. “I just want to go home.”

It laughed, the sound grated on my bones- it licked its paw once before its eyes searched my face again. “Fate, Serra... Fate is binding, drawn together by the tree sisters, the three goddesses. Each person’s destiny is thought of as a thread spun, measured, and cut. You cannot escape what is already laid out for you. But Free will has been and always will be your choice. However, be warned, Fate has a dark way of finding you and fulfilling itself.”
