Surrounded by Fae.

Where they came from I could not guess. I had only been in the presence of Hendrix and The Goblin King. Jesper had said that he had never seen another, but it did not set my nerves at ease. Not as their laughter reached my ears. Coming from every corner, it was guttural and hollow. The masks were horrifying renditions of animals, ugly and grotesque. The sea of monsters and goblins. This was not for the faint of heart. Designed to give you a fright. A warning not to stay long.

A nightmare.

I continued pushing my way through the crowd bumping into those around me. I needed to get out of here. Something about this place was wrong. Something about this place was cursed.

A hiss sound in my ear as I bump into a female Fae, a taunting flash of her teeth. “Sssssslut.”

Another behind me, a male. “Wwwwwhore.”

Another, “haaaarlot.”

Over and over the whispers and hisses from those surrounding me reached my ears. I could feel the tears pricking behind my eyes. The mockery was more than I could handle. Surly if they knew the truth they wouldn’t say such things. Surly they knew I was not, that it was not as it had seemed.

I want out of here.

Desperate to find an escape, the crowd was closing in on me. A group of Fae males had closed in. Taunting and jesting as they rapaciously reached out to grab me, my skirts, my hair. It felt as if they were tugging me in every direction.

But their hands never once touched me.

Their lips pulled back in vicious smiles.

I was startled by a sudden laugh that echoed in my ear. When I turned my head to the right, I saw a fae male wearing a contorted boar mask, while on my left, there was another male donning an oozing bear mask. Behind me, yet another fae, this one in a wolf mask. The crowd was filled with different masks, all adorned with sneering smiles, and they were closing in on me. I pushed past them with all my strength to get away.

As I made my way through the throng again, I sensed that something was in the air. Panic and anxiety washed over me, and I realized that I hadn't touched the food or wine. Suddenly, a flurry of gold flakes rained down on me, and I looked up, feeling someone's eyes watching me. My eyes scanned the ballroom and found him standing there among the crowd of Fae, his gaze locked on me.

There he was, waiting for me. I hadn't realized I had been looking for him, but the anxiety and panic vanished as a soothing calm washed over me. It was as if I had found the missing piece of a puzzle, and everything fell into place. I found peace in his eyes, and I knew I would never forget their colors again. But it was the way my heart called out to him, the way my whole being longed to be in his arms that caused me to pause. It became even more difficult to breathe as I stood there and watched him.

As I made my way towards him, my heart pounded in my chest, threatening to break free from its confines. The crowd parted like the Adrid Sea, as if sensing the electric charge that crackled between us. His eyes never left mine, drawing me in like a moth to a flame. I could feel the intensity of his gaze, the weight of his desire, and I knew I was in trouble.

But I couldn't help myself. I was drawn to him, as if he were a magnet and I was made of metal. As I stood before him, his eyes roamed over my body, taking me in from head to toe. I felt vulnerable, exposed, and yet strangely empowered. It was as if he had the power to strip away all my defenses, to lay me bare, and yet I didn't mind.

Deep breaths Serra.

One.

Two.

Another.

Another.

This beautiful Fae male, the one who haunted my dream, tormented every waking hour, he was going to be my undoing.

ChapterTwenty-Six

THE GOBLIN KING

The only place to hide from her was the back of the crystal and marble ballroom, just as I’d done before. My eyes tracked her as she made her way through the crowd of masked Fae. Staying far out of sight, lingering in the shadows as they tormented her. I watched as this vicious circle continued to rule over me.

Another deception.

Another prevarication.

How many more could I handle?

How many more lies would I have to give?
