He turns on me, a ruthless smile crosses his lips. “You do.”

“What could I possibly have that would be of any value? At least enough to give to you? I am of low status, undesired, and soiled. I have nothing!”

“Do you want to rid yourself of this anguish or not Serra? You made the wish mistake or no mistake. I am merely here to grant it.”

I thought to myself for a moment- did I really want to let go of this? I’d lost everyone, my mother and father, my baby brother. And now Nona Luna. I had no one left, not really. Kaston made it perfectly clear that I wasn’t anything but a tumble in the sheets. I’d been deflowered, tainted and unsuitable to be married to any other. I suppose I could live alone and become an old maid. But lifelong solitude and the torment of everyone I lost to keep me company?

It did cause some hesitation.

Did I want to care what the townspeople thought of me? The whispers I heard every time I came and left Rothnia. The things they said behind my back, I heard them. They hadn’t truly stopped. They just hadn’t the nerve to utter a word when Nona was around. They found her ways to be unnatural.

Trollop.

It’s no wonder no one wants her.

It’s her own fault that she defiled herself.

Her whole family was killed in a fire.

Heard she caused it; it was her fault.

The sickness plaguing us, it's her fault.

I heard she cast a spell on the sailors, lost at sea.

She’s been seeking retribution.

It’s her fault.

It's her fault!

HER FAULT!

The world around me spun as the voices echoed inside my head. Crashing into me. Spiraling down, down, down...

My fault. . .

Was everything really my fault? Did I cause the sickness? Did Nona die because of me? My family? I had no magic; I did not know spells. I wasn’t an enchantress. Magic had left the Lands decades ago. I was just a heartbroken girl. Before I knew what I was saying the words had slipped from my lips. “Yes, take it please. Whatever it is you want, just take it.”

Satisfaction crossed his face.

“Please.” I begged.

He nodded, “There is but one thing that I want from you, nothing else. If you agree to this bargain, then I will rid you of what causes your pain, what taunts you.”

“What is it? Whatever it is, yes.”

I should have hesitated, I should have considered what it was, but I did not. My mind was haunted by the aching pain of loss.

His smile grew, his wickedness showed there. He was a master at deception and I knew this, Iknewthis but it did not deter me. Nona’s warnings were forgotten amongst my insanity.

“I want your memories, Serra. Give them to me and I will free you from what is plaguing you. Think of what that means for you.”

“My- my memories?”

“Your memories are sufficient enough for payment.” He paced before me. “I want every memory you cherish. Every dream you’ve ever had.” His grin turned wicked as he said. “That is what I require from you.”

My dreams? My memories.?
