Then I approach Sukie, taking her face in my hands, and bring her lips a breath away from mine. There’s no going back from what I’m about to do. I cover her mouth with mine. The kiss is brutal and claiming, leaving no question that Sukie is off-limits. I tell myself I’m doing this for her protection, but deep down, I know it’s a lie.

I pull away to see a look of shock on her beautiful face. Then she becomes aware of the people crowded around us again, and her face turns red with a mixture of embarrassment and confusion. Sukie pulls away from me and runs across the yard. I jerk my chin at Wolf and Salem before taking off after Sukie.

Sukie stops beside a tree and buries her face in her hands. “Why would you do that?”

“Sukie.” I spin her around. “Look at me.”

She tries to shake off my hold. “You said…” Sukie takes a deep breath and refuses to give me eye contact. “You’re the one who made it clear there would and could not be anus. Then you use me to prove some sick primitive caveman point.”

“I was wrong before,” I say quietly, feeling the weight of my words as they hang between us. Sukie looks up at me, her eyes searching mine for any sign of deception. “I was wrong before,” I repeat, my voice grating. “I thought I could ignore my feelings for you, but I was so fuckin’ wrong. I want you, baby. So much it causes me pain.”

The intensity of my gaze makes her breath catch in her throat, and I can feel the tension between us building.

“I hurt you,” I continue, my voice rough with emotion. “I don’t deserve your forgiveness.” I take a step closer to her. “But I’m asking for a chance to fix my mistakes.”

“How do I trust that you are being truthful with me?” Her voice is laced with uncertainty. “How do I know you aren’t just saying things you want me to hear, only to take those words back later?”

I can see the doubt in her eyes, and it’s gutting me to have her look at me that way. “You don’t.” I’m honest with her, because words can only do so much. “I have to prove it to you.”

Sukie grips my forearms and closes her eyes. “I don’t think I can survive if you break the parts of me that aren’t already broken.”

I cup her face. “Eyes, baby.” My voice is thick and heavy with the weight of the confession I’m about to make. Her blue eyes meet mine again. “I’m trustin’ you not to break me, too.” I crush my lips against hers in a consuming kiss.

SUKIE

I allow Harlem to slip his tongue past my lips. He tastes of smoke and whiskey, and it’s better than I imagined. Harlem’s hand grips my hair while his arm slips around my waist, pulling me closer. His taste and scent, is making me dizzy with lust. His fist tightens, pulling at my braid, and a tinge of pain bites at my scalp. A shockwave of pleasure shoots through my body. I shudder, and my nipples harden.

Harlem growls into my mouth as my hardened peaks brush against his chest through my top. I don’t understand my body’s reaction, but Harlem’s hands on me and his lips against mine don’t allow me time to overthink. His tongue is just as demanding as he is. I can feel his erection hard against my belly. For once in my life, I allow myself to feel.

With my eyes closed tight, I let Harlem consume me. I bring my hands up and thread my fingers through his hair, pressing my body tighter against his, desperate for a deeper connection, as if what we have isn’t enough. It feels like it will never be enough. It’s not until he pulls away that the spell is broken.

“Open your eyes, baby.” I’ve never heard Harlem speak so softly.

I open my eyes, greeted by his handsome face.

“If your body catches fire with just my tongue in your mouth, I can’t wait to see what you’re like when I finally get my mouth on your pussy.”

His words knock me out of my stupor, and my face burns. Insecurity sets in, and I can’t help but think about my reaction to his kiss. Never in my life have I been this turned on.

Harlem must feel my body tense, and his easy-going smirk vanishes. Suddenly, I have a hard time looking at him.

“Eyes,” he growls.

I swallow past the lump in my throat and peer at him through my lashes.

“I fuckin’ love the way your body reacts to my touch.”

I know right away there is conviction in Harlem’s words. All the tension leaves my body.

“Good.” He brushes his lips against mine, and I melt at his praise. I don’t miss the way his eyes darken at my reaction.

“Come on.” Harlem takes my hand in his and leads me back into the clubhouse.

When he notices my resistance, I tell him, “I…I don’t want to go back to the party.”

My mind flashes back to that creep and how he wouldn’t take no for an answer. I shudder just thinking about what he might have tried had Harlem not been there. I knew coming to the club party wasn’t really my scene, but once again, I let Sage and Juniper talk me into it.
