The car stops, and stillness engulfs us. Mom falls back into the passenger seat. There are bits of broken glass entangled in her hair, and she has a nasty gash on her forehead.

Suddenly my door is wrenched open. My seat belt is torn off, and I’m hauled into Luca’s arms.

“Jesus fuckin’ Christ.” The torment Luca is currently feeling is coming off him in waves.

“My mom.” I try to break away from his hold.

“She’s fine. Baja has her.”

I look over the top of my car to see she’s alert and talking to Baja as he checks over her injuries. Relief washes over me. No longer able to contain my emotions, I break down. My knees buckle. Luckily, Luca only just catches me before I fall.

“I got you, baby.”

I start shaking uncontrollably as sobs wrack my body.

“You’re okay, Sukie. I want you to breathe, baby.”

“I was so…s-s-s…scared,” I choke out.

“Baby.” Luca tries again to calm me down.

“I…I thought I was going to die. All I kept thinking about was God can’t take me now. Not when I’m finally happy. Not when I’ve finally fallen in love.”

“Say it again.” Luca’s grip on me tightens.

I lift my head from his chest and peer up at him through watery eyes. “I love you.”

When he doesn’t say anything in return, I worry that my confession wasn’t a good idea.

“I know it’s probably too soon to be saying those words, and I don’t expect you to say them back.” I hiccup. “As a matter of fact, you can pretend you didn’t hear me say that.”

Luca’s jaw ticks. “Shut up.”

Startled and suddenly feeling vulnerable, I try again to escape his hold.

“You can let me down now.” I hate how small my voice sounds right now.

Why did I have to go and tell him I love him? I’m so damn stupid. Stupid. Stupid. Stupid. In my defense, I just went through something which could have killed me.

“If you think I’m going to let you go after you just told me you’re in love with me, you’ve lost your fuckin’ mind,” Luca rumbles.

I stop struggling. “What?” I breathe. “I…I thought I screwed up by confessing that.”

“Baby.” Luca cups my cheek. “Hearing you say you’re in love with me is hands down the sweetest words I’ve ever heard.”

“Really?”

“Really.” He kisses me. “I love you too, Sukie. So fuckin’ much.”

I wrap my arms around Luca and bury my face in his neck.

“Brother.” We’re interrupted by Baja. “Talked to Prez. We have to go. Now.”

With a nod, Luca sets me on my feet. “You good to ride?”

“Yes. What about my car and our stuff?”

“Prez has someone coming for it. For now, he wants us at the clubhouse. Your mom will ride with me,” Baja says.
