“Sukie had no part in my former husband’s death.” Alice raises her voice.

“Oh, come off it, Mommy dear.” Bianca rolls her eyes. “Your daughter isn’t the quiet, innocent woman she portrays herself as. She’s a cold-blooded killer.”

“You have no proof.” Alice stares Bianca down.

“A couple of officers seem to think otherwise and are more than eager to prove it. All they need is the right people in their corner to produce incriminating evidence that would put poor innocent Sukie away for the rest of her life.” Bianca then looks at me. “Choose me and come home, Luca.”

She is fucking delusional.

“Did you honestly think I would turn my back on my woman just because you came in here, throwing out threats?” My voice rises with every word. “To be with you?” Hate fills me. “I choose Sukie. I always will. And let’s be even clearer. If my woman kills a man today, I’ll help her bury the fuckin’ body.” My chest heaves as ripples of anger flow through me.

Bianca's arm whips up. In her hand is a small gun, and it's aimed right at Sukie. The move catches us all by surprise, and the entire club is suddenly caught in a tense stand off. Alice tries standing in front of her daughter, but Sukie resists, attempting to protect her mother instead.

“You just sealed your fate,” I growl.

“You could never kill me, Luca.” Bianca keeps her eyes glued on Sukie. She shifts her body, gripping the gun with both hands, ready to pull the trigger.

A reverberating echo follows a loud pop. Bianca slumps to the floor. Behind her, Ophelia slowly lowers the hand wielding her late husband’s pistol. She had slowly, quietly entered through the front door moments ago. Ophelia looks at me, then, without saying a word, quickly exits the room, heading toward the back of the clubhouse.

“I’m so sorry.” Sukie starts crying.

“You have nothin’ to apologize for.”

“This is all my fault.” She glances down at Bianca.

“Like hell it is. None of this is on you.”

“I can’t. This is too much.” Sukie glances at her mom, and then she looks at me. “I can’t do this anymore.” Her words feel like a shot in the gut.

“What the fuck does that mean?” I find myself defensive when, really, I’m worried she is about to break what’s left of me by leaving.

She takes a deep breath, and I hold mine, waiting for her to deliver the final blow. “I killed my stepdad.” She waits for my reaction, but I give her none. She continues. “Mom was working late one night, and my stepdad decided to force himself on me.” My muscles grow tense. “It was during the struggle to fend him off and get away. He pulled his gun, trying to force me into submission.”

Tears stream down Sukie’s face. Seeing her relive what happened tears me apart inside and makes me want to kill the bastard all over again.

“I fought back the best I could, trying to grab his weapon away, but the gun went off, killing him.”

“I wasn’t about to see my daughter’s life waste away behind prison bars.” Alice lovingly looks at Sukie, giving her a teary smile. “I confessed to shooting him in self-defense.”

Sukie glances around, realizing all eyes are on her. The entire family is now standing in the room, apart from Ophelia and the two littles.

I swipe the tears from her cheeks. “Your secret changes nothing.”

“Really?”

“We’re in this together, baby.”

“Hell, yeah, we are!” Sage shouts.

“You know I’ve got your back, girl,” Juniper says.

“The club stands with you, Sukie,” Salem states, solidifying the unity.

“What if your father follows through with his threat?”

“You trust me?”

“With all my heart.” Sukie slips her hand in mine.
