There’s no hiding the thunderous sound of our approach as we speed past the broken security gate near the warehouse entrance. We pull to a stop behind a rusty storage container.

Juneau unstraps a bag fastened to the back of his bike. He unzips the top and passes out extra guns and ammunition.

“Be prepared for anything, right?” He checks his weapon before hiding it beneath his shirt in the waistband of his jeans.

I make sure my clips are fully loaded and look at my brothers. “We fight together; we fall together.”

Wasting no time, we approach the warehouse, weapons ready. It’s quiet—too quiet—as we enter the building. The air inside is thick with years of dust mixed with the musty smell of rat shit. We pass by a rusty conveyer belt covered in broken glass and cobwebs.

Suddenly, a light flickers in the center of the room, revealing my father. Standing to his right, with her hands bound in front of her, is Sukie and a man with a gun pressed against her side. I rush forward, my gun aimed at my father’s chest. He lifts his hand, pointing a gun at me, and I stop in my tracks.

“I die. You die. She dies.”

I lower my weapon, tossing it to the ground.

“I know you better than that. Toss the other one.” My father waits for me to comply, and I toss my other weapon to the ground.

We didn’t agree on what I was about to do next because the club already made it clear it wouldn’t happen. But in the end, Sukie’s life comes before mine, and there is no way out of this for her unless I give my father what he wants.

“You win. Now let her go.”

“Whether she lives or dies is of no concern to me. As a matter of fact, not one of you will walk out of here breathing. But you already knew this was a suicide mission. However, I can’t ignore your disobedience. My men must see that even you are not above the DeSantis name.” His eyes narrow. “One by one, you’ll watch your family fall. That’s the price you’ll pay.”

I tear my eyes off my father and lock them on Sukie, who looks at me unafraid of what’s to come, which confuses me. Instead, all I see is love. Then she mouths, it’s okay.

“Alessandro DeSantis.” A voice I don’t recognize echoes off the building’s steel walls, and I watch my father’s face turn pale.

Footsteps tap against the floor behind me, but I can’t tear my eyes off Sukie to see who is approaching. A man dressed in a black tailored suit stops a couple of feet in front of me off to the side. He looks at me, then back at my father.

“Demetri.” My father’s hand, holding the gun, trembles. The son of a bitch is scared.

“It appears your son and I share a common interest.”

My father balks. “And what would that be?”

“You. Dead.” Demetri looks at my father with disdain. “What? You didn’t think I would find out you tried to double-cross me?”

“I don’t know what you are talking about.” My father sneers, and I can tell he’s lying by the nervous twitch in his eye.

“Oh, but you do,” Demetri says.

My father’s face hardens. “Do you think you can walk in here and defeat me alone? My men are lying in wait all around this warehouse. One word, and you’re dead. All of you.”

Demetri grins. “You mean the pile of bodies out back? I think you’ll find them to be rather useless.”

At least two dozen men emerge from the shadows.

“Unless you think Alessandro DeSantis wields enough power to turn my men against me.”

My father’s empire is crumbling around him, and he knows it. He shifts his focus back to me, and my eyes dart between him and Sukie, whose attention remains locked on me.

“Kill her,” he orders, and all the air vacates my lungs.

“No!” I bellow, rushing forward only to watch the man holding her at gunpoint lower his weapon and release her. While another man, who looks a lot like Demetri, puts a gun to the back of my father’s head. Sukie runs past Demetri, straight into my arms.

I turn my back on my father, shielding her petite body. “Are you okay?” I frantically look her over for injuries.

“I’m okay,” she assures me.
