Jane shook her head. "I don't care about more babies—there are plenty of children that need homes. But I just want one with Kai, to give him what he gave up when he picked me to be his mate."

Dr. McFarland took her hand. "Lass, he didn't give up anything. I've seen how he looks at you, and you are his world, Jane. If you're going to put your body through this, then ensure it's because you want a child too."

Jane nodded. "I do. And not just to annoy my brother's daughters."

Dr. Sid raised an eyebrow. "Nikki and Rafe only have one daughter so far."

Jane smiled. "I think they'll have two soon." She sobered. "But yes, I want to try and keep this baby. I'm aware my chances aren't good, but if I have to stay in bed the whole time, I will."

Dr. Sid bobbed her head. "Then we'll do all that we can to try and make it happen. You have more doctors than you will ever need for the next week, so there will always be someone on hand to help. And I can discuss this with them?" Jane nodded and the doctor continued, "Well, then we should probably have Gregor bring in Kai. We'll stay to explain it all and make sure he knows not to smother you while trying to take care of you."

The corner of Jane's mouth kicked up. "I'm pretty good at telling him to sod off, when needed."

Both doctors laughed, and Dr. McFarland said, "I don't doubt it, lass. Now, let's tell your mate everything and then you need to rest. You'll get a shot of dragon's blood today and then you'll stay the night, just to be safe, so we can monitor you and the bairn."

As Dr. Sid left to fetch Kai and Dr. McFarland wrote some notes on her chart, Jane picked at the sheet and took a few deep breaths. Kai was about to become extremely overbearing and overprotective, and she'd need her strength to tame it. Because she meant to start as they went on.

Although once the doctors finished telling Kai her situation, what to expect, and how he needed to listen to her, Kai lay down next to her on the small bed and pulled her close. He kissed the top of her head and said, "Dragon cuddles to make you feel better."

She laughed. "So this is what it took for you to freely offer them, huh?"

As she relaxed against her mate, he grunted. "Want to know a secret, Janey?"

She glanced up at Kai. "I thought we didn't keep secrets?"

"Usually, no. But I do have one."

"Which is?"

He whispered, "I fucking love dragon cuddles with my mate."

Jane laughed and hugged Kai closer. "I knew it the whole time."

And as they fell asleep together like that, Jane knew the coming days and months would be difficult. But as long as she had Kai, she could endure anything.

ChapterEight

Adrian Conroy hadn't tried to be a bastard and make Jane Hartley faint. He'd simply had a question and assumed everyone else could smell her pregnancy.

But as Jane and her mate left with the doctor, Asher King came up to him and grunted. "Was that question really necessary?"

Adrian was several inches taller than Asher and glanced down to meet the Skyhunter leader's eyes. "What? It's a legitimate concern. She clearly has a passion, but who else will be working with her? It's no different than asking who would be in charge when a clan leader's mate went into labor."

Finn Stewart walked up to them and said, "Are you sure about that, Conroy? Or are you just looking for an excuse not to join in?"

Part of him was, in fact, doing exactly that. But not because it would be difficult to convince older dragon-shifters to take in a few orphans, especially if they were from Ireland. No, he had another big reason, having to do with a certain female.

His dragon spoke up.It's highly unlikelyshewill make the visits.

You say that, but you know she conducts clan check-ins for transfers and human mates.

The "she" in question was Elsie Day—the human female he'd once kissed, started a frenzy, and then had been torn away from to suffer alone. Even if the true mate pull faded with time, Adrian didn't want to risk it. Especially since he'd only become clan leader recently, and he still had a lot to prove.

Not that he'd tell the other clan leaders about that. He might be getting to know them and trying to trust them, but he wasn't about to offer up weaknesses freely, for them to dangle over him.

His dragon sighed.Stop being so distrustful and wary.

Given our past, you should know it's not that easy.
