Adrian gestured toward the door. "Let's go tell the others my answer."

As he followed Teagan into the room, he only hoped he could protect any children sent to Northcastle—both from enemies and possibly even some of his own clan members.

His dragon spoke up.Anyone who hurts them, or tries to make them feel unwelcome, will be dealt with.

Yes, but he had to decide if banishment would be the best choice. Lochguard had done that, and now there was a clan-less group of dragons hiding somewhere, waiting to pounce.

Regardless, Adrian would find a solution. After all, he'd wanted to be clan leader to effect change. This was just one more thing he'd add to his list to handle.

ChapterNine

Kai watched his mate, asleep on his chest, and he tried to come to terms with everything that had happened. Part of him was overjoyed at the fact she’d finally conceived. And yet, a larger part of him was worried. There were so many fucking risks.

His dragon spoke up.Jane’s choice is to try and have the baby. If Dr. Sid says it’s too dangerous, no doubt Janey will listen.

He wanted to believe that. But he also knew that Jane viewed having his baby as a sort of way to prove they were meant to be together. Even after everything that had happened, his mate still doubted him. And it stung a little.

His dragon grunted, but Jane stirred a little, meaning she’d wake up soon. His beast added quickly,I don’t think it’s doubt, but more that she wants a family.

I’d already planned on suggesting to her that we should adopt one of the orphans.

Yes, but with me and not with her. You should tell her.

Jane’s eyes fluttered open, and she blinked a few times before meeting his gaze. She smiled. “Morning.”

He kissed her. “How do you feel, love?”

“Better. Well, at least lying down. We’ll have to see what happens once I eat and try to move around.”

He caressed her cheek with the back of his knuckles. “Whatever you need, just ask for it, Janey.”

She adjusted so that she sat up, facing him. For a few beats, she merely stared at him, as if trying to read his expression. Finally she said, “You don’t seem as happy as I thought you’d be, Kai. Why?”

Taking her hand in his, he replied, “I am happy, but also worried.” He brought her hand to his mouth and kissed the back of it. “You’re my everything, Janey. I wish you’d accept that.”

She bit her bottom lip and then sighed. “I know, Kai. I think at first, trying to have a baby was a way to prove we were supposed to be together. I know you rejected Maggie, and not even her kiss affects your dragon any longer. But—”

“No fucking buts.” He moved closer, until their faces weren’t more than a few inches apart. “You’re mine, Jane. Mine. And if you want a child, we can adopt one. Hell, we can adopt five, if you so wish.” He cupped her cheek and caressed it with his thumb. “You don’t have to risk your life to prove anything.”

She placed her hand over his. “I know. But I want to try, Kai. I’ll probably drive you mad when I’m on bedrest. I’ll be grumpy, and short-tempered, and I’ll get bored easily. But despite the risks, I want to at least try. I trust Dr. Sid.”

“As long as you promise me that if she says your life is in danger, you'll listen.”

She nodded. “I will. I can be stubborn, which will help in the coming months, but not to the point I want to die from it.”

A rush of relief coursed through him. “Good. Because I won’t survive without you, Janey. I don’t want to.”

She moved until she sat in Kai’s lap and looped her arms around his neck. “Well, at least maybe now you understand a little about how I feel whenever you rush into a dangerous job.” He grunted, but she continued before he could say anything. “But I know protecting the clan is part of who you are, and I wouldn’t change it. Still, it’s fucking terrifying.” She kissed his lips gently. “And just as you always tell me you’d move heaven and earth to come back to me, I’m going to do the same to stay right here by your side. Even if it means I have to make a hard decision.”

Kai brushed the hair from his mate’s face. “The shot of my dragon’s blood has already improved your coloring, and I suspect Dr. Sid and her doctor group will suggest other things to help. So let’s hope it doesn’t come to that.”

She smiled at him. “Thank you for at least allowing me to try, even with some risk.”

“As if I could deny you anything.”

A playful glint entered her eyes. “So once I’ve had the baby and am well again, does that mean I can go to Ireland and interview the new clan leaders?”

He raised an eyebrow. “We’ll see. It would need to be by the book, and I would have to accompany you. But I'll at least consider it.”
