“Not this one,” I snorted.

“Well, now that the audit is over, there’s nothing really stopping you from being able to ask her out, right?” he posed.

“Other than the fact that she might be involved with a throuple? I have no idea.”

Preston’s green eyes flared with humor. “There’s also the possibility that she might just not like you, Rush. I know, it’s absolutely unheard of, but it’s possible.”

I cocked my head. “Fuck, I can’t remember the last time that I asked a woman out with the intent of wanting to actually get to know her. I think it was college.”

“Don’t look at me for help,” Preston grinned. “I can’t remember a time when I wasn’t in love with my wife. If I had a life before Kitty, I can’t remember it.”

“I actually believe that,” I replied.

“It’s true,” he insisted. “Sometimes, when I get home and she’s yelling at the kids, I just look at her and know that I wouldn’t know how to dress myself if she ever left me.” Preston let out a heavy sigh. “One day, Thomas, Rodrick, and Lily are going to be out of the house, living their own lives, and it’s going to just be me and Kitty again.” My brother’s face lit up. “I can’t fucking wait.”

That’s what I wanted.

That look on my brother’s face was what I wanted for myself. Prior to meeting Landry Novak, I hadn’t cared one way or the other.

However, I cared now.

Chapter 9

Landry~

Icouldn’t remember ever feeling this tired after a job before. While the audit had taken about a week and a half, it shouldn’t have exhausted me this much. I could name a million other jobs that had lasted longer and that had been harder to audit. Still, for whatever reason, I felt freakin’ exhausted.

“Landry, your aura is all over the place,” Rowena said, her pretty face etched with concern. “Usually, you’re liquored up when it’s this jumbled.”

“Speaking of-”

“No,” she said, cutting me off. “No alcohol until I get a handle on what the hell is going on with your energy.”

“Bryant Stanton is what’s wrong with my energy,” I snorted. “He’s evil, and we could have done a protection spell around me if you really didn’t want to break his leg for me.”

Rowena shot me a look. “How many times do I have to tell you that I am not a voodoo priestess, Landry? I can’t do stuff like that.”

“See? That’s your problem, Rowena,” I told her, wagging a finger at her. “You lack confidence. If you believed in yourself the way that I do, your powers would be endless.”

My best friend let out a weary sigh. “Jesus Christ, you Dodo bird. For the millionth time, I do not havepowers. My gifts are notpowers.”

“I disagree, ma’am,” I replied in my best British accent. “The definition of power is the ability to do something or act in a particular way, especially as a faculty or quality.”

Rowena’s hazel eyes widened. “How can you possibly know that?”

I shrugged. “I have no life,” I said by way of explanation. “I play a lot of word games on my phone when I’m waiting for my coffee or lunch or whatever.”

Shooting me another look, she asked, “Can we get back to your reading, please?”

“The sooner the better,” I agreed. “I think Mark is bored and is just waiting to be able to make those margaritas for us.”

“The last thing that Mark is, is bored,” Rowena snorted. “We have too many kids for him to be bored.”

“Kids that can pretty much take care of themselves, Row,” I pointed out.

Running her hands over the tabletop, she said, “Forget Mark, the margaritas, and the fur babies. Let’s get a reading on your aura and see what the hell is going on with you.”

“Bryant Stanton,” I repeated. “He is what’salwayswrong with me, Row.”
