Landry took his hand in hers as she smiled at him as well. “It’s nice to meet you, Mr. Courtney.”

“Davis, please,” he insisted, and the way that he said it had the hairs on the back of my neck standing up. The fucker was trying to charm her, even with a goddamn wedding ring on his finger.

“Davis,” she obliged, and I could feel a tick in my jaw.

“Well, gentlemen, I think it’s time that we let these fine folks get back to work,” I announced like a douchebag.

“No, yeah,” Preston agreed. “We should probably talk about what’s going on anyway.”

Landry went back to her boxes, effectively dismissing us, and if there was ever a woman that wasn’t impressed by money, status, or power, it was the one currently muttering under her breath. I was curious to know if she was just muttering about her boss or if she was muttering about men in general.

Bryant looked back over at Landry and said, “I’ll be back after my meeting with Mr. Courtney and the Crawfords. I’ll expect a progress update from the entire team.”

Landry looked flummoxed. “Then it’s probably a good idea to let theteamknow that, no?”

“It’s not that difficult a message, Landry,” Bryant sighed. “I’m sure you can relay it to the team.”

Plastering that deranged smile back on her face again, she said, “Of course, Bryant.”

With that, she walked out of the room, and I’d never wanted to chase after a woman so badly in all my life.

Chapter 5

Landry~

“Landry, what the hell is this?”

My head shot upward, a sheet of paper stuck to my face. I looked around, my blinking eyes trying to make sense of what I was seeing, and though it took a minute or so, I finally realized where I was. Reaching up, I plucked the sheet of paper off my face, my eyes still blinking against the bright light.

Shit, what time was it?

Lifting my arm, I tried to focus on my watch, wishing that a cup of coffee would magically appear in my hand. When I saw that it was six in the morning, I almost groaned out loud. It made no sense why Bryant would be here this early in the morning, but when I finally looked over at his horrified face, I saw Mr. Crawford standing behind him, and that answered that.

Shaking my head, I let out the most unladylike yawn ever, and I quickly wondered if I had any breath mints in my purse. Yeah, I doubted that this place had a shower available, but this wouldn’t be the first time that I’d ever skipped a shower while working.

“Uh…I must have fallen asleep,” I mumbled tiredly, stating the obvious like a tool.

“Yes, I can see that,” Bryant snapped as he stepped further into the room. “What I’d like to know iswhy? How could you believe that this would be acceptable?”

The smart thing to do would be to play dumb. I could easily act like an airhead or claim exhaustion due to a cold or something. I could lie and say that all the pipes in my condo burst, so I had no choice but to stay here. There were so many tales that I could conjure up just to save face and keep professionalism on the table.

However, screw this dude.

“Well, after you asked me to take on some of your work, so that you could catch the first hockey playoff game last night, yourrequestcut into some of my research time,” I said, not caring that he was going to reprimand me later for telling the truth. “After taking care of the documentation that you asked me to go over, I went back to work onmyassignments, and I must have fallen asleep.”

Bryant’s face turned so red that I feared he might pop a blood vessel.

Okay, I didn’tfearit.

Actually, I was eager to see it happen.

Anything to get him out of my hair for a few days.

“How dare you suggest that I-”

“Okay, that’s enough,” Mr. Crawford said, stepping in.

If I was five and not thirty-six, I would have stuck my tongue out at Bryant. However, I was already in enough trouble, and in all honesty, I wouldn’t be surprised if he pulled me off this job. Nothing bothered Bryant more than being called out on his shit, and I’d found myself doing it more and more lately. Rowena was always telling me that people only treated you the way that you allowed them to, and I was getting really tired of allowing Bryant Stanton to treat me like crap.
