“I love you, Jessa,” he says, pulling me closer until nothing exists but the two of us. “You’re so strong and independent, and I don’t want to diminish any of that. I never want you to think I’m trying to buy your affection, but I will do everything in my power to make sure you’re safe and at peace. This is your peace.”
I open my mouth to say something, but I snap it closed again when I feel the corners of my eyes prickle.
“You thoughtful asshole,” I force out, my voice cracking as I reach to wipe away a stray tear. “I love you, too.”
He leans down to press his lips to mine, cupping his hand behind my neck and kissing me until I’m breathless and my head is spinning.
“Yeah, but I’m your asshole, and you’re stuck with me forever.” He laughs as he pulls away and rubs his thumb over his mark on my neck.
“Forever’s anawfullylong time.” I purse my lips jokingly and cock an eyebrow at him. It’s serious enough that the stinging sensation fades, but lighthearted enough to know I’m just kidding.
He smiles again, rubbing his thumb back over his mark and making my skin tingle. “Somehow, I doubt it’ll be long enough.”
