“No.”

Fuck.

Apparently, despite needing to clock out and go home to prevent causing any workplace issues, I’m going to stay and make sure she’s taught everything correctly. I’ll make sure all her questions are answered and that nothing gets messed up along the way.

Clearly, I have the best interests of the restaurant at heart. It’s definitelynotthe blood racing straight to my cock.

“Were you avoiding me yesterday?” she asks, taking me by surprise. It’s completely out of bounds, but it proves she looked for me, and I wasn’t here.

It’s also terrifying how accurate she is.If only she knew.

“No. I had things to do.” I don’t make a habit of lying, but this one is crucial. I’ve gone about this as carefully as possible, doing my best to help Jessa get out of the situation she’s in without inserting myself too much, and admitting I stayed away to avoid her would only cause problems.

She doesn’t need to know why I do the things I do, only that I do them.

That has to be enough for her.

“I’m just kidding. I was just surprised you took a day off.” She smirks and flounces off across the dining room after Sara, who’s straightening tables in the middle of the room, and my eyes trail after her.

To have never had a job before, Jessa catches on quickly.

She’s familiar with the menu, and her customer service voice is impeccable, something most people struggle to master. It seems she’s a hit with the regulars too–she smiles at them and practically has them eating out of the palm of her hand after a few hours.

I watch from the bar, pumping out drinks between staring at her and trying to keep my thoughts professional.

It doesn’t help that she looks so damn sexy in those pants.

I ignore the twinge of jealousy I feel as the men smile and wink in her direction. They slip her extra dollars, calling her over more times than necessary, and I don’t like how close they are to her.

If anyone so much as looks at her wrong or tries to cop a feel, I’ll put them through a table.

She might not bemine, but she’s mine to protect, and I’ll do just that.

After several hours of not even looking my way, Jessa sidles up to the bar and folds her hands on top of it, watching me with a mischievous glint in her eye.

“Do you need something?” I ask, keeping my voice level even though I’m relieved she’s come to talk to me. I should probably be scolding her and reminding her of the side work she’s neglecting right now, but I can’t. Not when she’s doing exactly what I want her to do.

“You’re a beast with that shaker,” she teases. “I’ve been bragging about your skills all night.”

“Oh?” I cock an eyebrow in her direction before pouring two drinks and passing them to a man at the end of the bar. Then, I grab a glass and start to work on another drink. “Is that so?”

“Yeah. They just keep giving me funny looks when I tell them you’re good with your hands.” She shrugs and rolls her eyes toward the ceiling. “Not really sure why.”

I gape, blood draining from my face, and I nearly fumble the bottle of tequila I’m holding. Thankfully, we’re just out of earshot from everyone sitting at the bar.

“What?” I ask sharply, heat creeping up my neck to my stoic face and south to my cock. Surely she didn’t say that. There’s no way she’s been telling customers that.

I glance nervously around the dining room, searching for curious gazes watching Jessa and me together, but no one bothers to look our way.

She giggles, scrunching her nose at me. “I’m just kidding. Got you though.”

The relief at knowing it’s a joke is sweeping, washing over me in a tidal wave, and I force an uncomfortable laugh. I’m embarrassed, but not in a way that would make me snap at her or send her away.

I’m surprised she got to me at all.

Nothing surprises me most of the time, nothing bothers me. I’ve seen it all, heard it all, but somehow, Jessa seems to slice through every wall I have, constantly shattering my expectations.

I can hardly think of anything to say in response, my mind still reeling.
