He kept his eyes on the file as he responded. “Sorry, I know I said I wouldn’t leave the lab, but your lab — ” He looked up “What’s wrong?”

She tossed the newspaper in front of him and watched as he read. When he finished, he leaned back in his chair, squeezing his bottom lip between his fingers.

“Well?” she said when he didn’t respond.

“I’m thinking.”

“How’d they get that information?”

“Did you know we were making enhanced humans? Because I didn’t. They obviously know more about our work than we do.”

“You think this is funny?”

He looked through the article again. “Not funny, no. Not at all, actually. The information they printed is obviously bogus, but there is enough detail that this could be very dangerous.”

“Dangerous? I thought it was embarrassing. Now people are going to think I’m a joke.”

“I’d prefer that. Who would know enough about your work to sell them a story like that, but not enough to be accurate?”

Sydney pulled out her phone, googled the number for the newspaper, and dialed.

“I’m about to find out. Hi, I’d like to speak to — ” She grabbed the paper from Pallon and stabbed her finger on the journalist’s name. “Gretta Lakeland.”

“Can I tell her who’s calling, please?” the bored voice on the other end said.

“Professor Syd Davis. She wrote an article about me in today’s paper.”

“One moment.”

“Put it on speaker,” Chris said.

“I don’t like talking on speaker.”

“Paranoid?”

She nodded toward the paper. “And rightfully so.”

The hold music clicked off. “Professor Davis. This is Gretta. How can I help you? Did you want to make a comment regarding the article? Or maybe do a follow-up? I’d love to get your opinion.”

“You didn’t think to ask for my opinion before you ran the article?”

“Didn’t need to.”

“How odd. When was it that the Gazette turned into a tabloid?”

“That’s a bit harsh.” A smirk was evident in her voice.

“And how harsh do you think it is to publish confidential information? I want to know who your source is.”

“I’m sorry, butthatinformationisconfidential. I’m surprised you aren’t aware of who knows about your research.”

Syd huffed. “That’s my exact problem. There is no one who would share the details with a reporter.”

“I’m a journalist.”

“Whatever you are, I’d like to make a formal complaint because the information was obtained illegally.”

“You are certainly entitled to make a complaint, but it will be a waste of your time. I can’t tell you how my source obtained the information, but I used it legally. The public has a right to know if you’re helping to create a super army.”
