“You’re right. You’re always right, and it’s a little infuriating.”

Peter laughed. “If I’m always right, then go tell Sydney that you love her.”

“Wait, who said anything about love?”

“Am I wrong?”

“I — I don’t know. I haven’t even gotten that far.”

“Then just go tell her where you’re at.”

Aaron looked at Sydney, who was holding a pen in her teeth while she took another look through the microscope. She looked up at the ceiling, then stretched her neck.

“Wish me luck,” Aaron said, then stood.

* * *

Sydney jumped when Aaron leaned on the table next to her. “Sorry. I was too focused.” She rubbed her eyes.

“You think maybe you should take a break?”

“I don’t have time for a break. My thoughts are clearing because of the drug, but I don’t know how long that will last. I’m going to take full advantage of the help because I could start degenerating at any moment.”

There was a knock on the door and they turned to see what looked like a minion in the window.

Lewis waved his yellow-gloved arm. “Hey, guys. How’re you doing?” His words fogged up the protective covering on his helmet.

Aaron walked to the door. “Lookin’ good, Lewis.”

“Thanks. I brought you guys some food.”

“You don’t have more important things to do?”

“More important than looking after you guys? No. I’ll leave it out here. You can open the door once I’ve left the area.”

“Thanks, Lewis. I appreciate it.”

“How’s everyone’s mental state?”

“Probably better than can be expected.”

“Good. You’ve got my number, so let me know if there’s anything you need.”

“Thanks, Lewis. We will.”

Aaron brought the food in and everyone but Sydney dug in.

“Hey, Syd. You have time to take a break to eat.”

Aaron put a hand on her arm, and she yanked it away. “I don’t need food. That food is pointless if we all die. And a break will set us back further. You go eat. I’ll be fine.”

“Sydney. Come on.”

“No, I can’t.” She pressed a hand against her forehead. “This is all my fault. As soon as I knew what I had, I should have stopped. I could have destroyed it and none of this would have happened. I messed everything up.” Tears brimmed in her eyes, but none fell. “I thought I was doing what God wanted. Even when I expected to be shot by Leo, it still felt like I was doing the right thing. But now everyone’s lives are at stake and I don’t know how to reconcile that. I must have gotten it wrong. I’ve gotten everything wrong.”

“You need to stop second guessing yourself and just let God do his thing.”

“You can’t seriously be saying that to me right now. So I should sit in the chair and wait for God to magically create a cure?”
