“Okay, no problem. Read the file. You’ll find it’s pretty straightforward. We just need to keep an eye on the professor until he stops seeing monsters under his bed.”

“Sir?”

“I don’t know what you’ve heard but working in the field isn’t always action-packed. For this job, there will be a lot of standing around. All we are doing is giving this Professor Davis confidence that he is safe so he can go about his work.”

“Who are we protecting him from?”

“No one. It’s all precautionary.”

“Oh. I see.”

“Just be polite and stay out of the way.”

“Right. Good. Sir.”

“That doesn’t mean that we don’t stay alert.”

“No, of course. Got it. When do we head out?”

Aaron pulled his jacket off the back of his chair. “Let’s go introduce ourselves to Professor Davis right now.”

* * *

Lewis was glued to the file on Davis while Aaron drove.

He looked confused when he closed it.

“Everything okay?” Aaron asked.

“Have you read this file yet?”

“No, not yet. I expect you to give me all the important information after you’ve finished studying it.”

“Do you usually not read up on your assignments before you go? I mean, that’s fine, if that’s what you do. I know things are different in my department. I need to know what it is I’m researching.” He laughed nervously. “So I have to read it. I guess you can get away with it.”

“No, Lewis, I don’t usually skip the read, but I wanted to give you the chance to get a sense for it without my input.” And it was a way for him to silently protest. “But if you can’t discern pertinent information from a file, let me know now.”

“No, sir. I just … I don’t want you to miss anything if I get it wrong.”

“I’m not missing anything. Knightly gave me the overview. I know what we’re doing.”

“Right. Did he tell you Professor Davis does cancer research?”

“Is that pertinent?”

“I guess not. But it’s good, right? I think it’s good. My mom had cancer.”

Aaron pressed his lips together. He wasn’t in a good head space to get personal. “I’m sorry to hear that.”

“She’s good now. She’s been cancer free for ten years, so … ”

“Great. Glad to hear it.”

Aaron parked the car a block away from the five-story brick building that housed the lab.

“Okay, Agent Lewis. Your first task is to go into the building that houses the lab and find out where Davis’s office is.”

“Didn’t you want me to give you the important details of the case?”
