She rubbed her eyes and looked at the time. It was just after eight. “Oh. I don’t often pay much attention to the time. I go home when I can’t keep working.”

“Is that healthy?”

“Do you clock off at five?” She considered him as he grinned. He looked the same as he had when he walked in. He didn’t look ruffled or tired in the slightest. She ignored the longing that tightened her stomach.

“Should I send Agent Lewis out for some dinner?” He looked out the door at his partner and she used the opportunity to rub a finger under her eyes in case her eyeliner had smudged.

“No.” She pushed back from the desk. “I can do more work at home. It’s secure enough there.”

“Oh? So you lock the door?”

She ignored his snicker and turned off her computer. “You can take me home, then take a break.” She stretched and yawned, but her face froze mid-yawn. “Wait. You’re not supposed to watch my house all night, are you?”

“Your house will be monitored tonight, but not by me. We’ve got more agents for that.”

“And where will they be staying? They don’t have to stay in my house, do they?”

That smile again. “No. They’ll remain outside and make sure no one comes sniffing around. That is, unless something changes.”

“Changes? Like what?”

“Like the threat increases.”

“It won’t.”

“Good. Then I’ll be back tomorrow.”

“Okay then.” Sydney locked her office door and walked past Lewis, who couldn’t hold back a giant yawn of his own.

“Sorry to keep you up,” Syd said with a sly grin.

“Oh.” Lewis straightened. “No, that wasn’t anything. Sorry. It’s just been a slow day — I mean. Fine. The day’s been fine.”

Sydney reached the door. “Shall we go?”

“I’ll take the lead,” Aaron said, stepping into the hall ahead of her. “Agent Lewis will follow behind.”

Sydney sighed. “Really?”

“That’s our job.”

They didn’t speak as they exited the building, but Sydney found herself looking suspiciously up hallways after Aaron had checked them.

When they exited the building, a cool breeze blew in her face. “My scarf.” Sydney said, reaching for her throat. “I forgot it.”

“Agent Lewis will get it.”

“I will?” Lewis said. “I will.”

Sydney dug into her purse for the lab key. “I can get it. He doesn’t need to go.”

Aaron shook his head. “If you go get it, then we all need to go. Where’d you leave it?”

“On a chair just to the left when you enter the lab. Here’s the key.”

Lewis disappeared back inside.

“Dr. Pallon said you were big on security, but you just hand your key over like that? I mean, Lewis is an FBI agent, but still. You don’t even let your boss have access.”
