“That’s the main security. If I knew someone would try to cut my hand off, I would have done things differently. I mean, I only added enough security based on who might want to steal it. Up until now, I didn’t think anyone dangerous was after it.” She wilted.

Aaron resisted the urge to put a comforting hand on her arm. If she were anyone else, he probably would have. “Did they say anything else?”

“No.”

“It doesn’t matter if it doesn’t seem important. I need as much detail as I can get.”

“No. Nothing. They didn’t say much.”

“All right. I guess that’s enough for now. Are you going to be okay at home? We’ll make sure you’re safe, but will you feel safe? Is there anyone we can call?”

“No. I’ll be okay.”

“Then let’s get you home.”

Chapter8

“Shouldn’t I come with you?”Lewis asked when Aaron ordered him to stay with the prisoner, who was being loaded into the ambulance.

“No, I need someone with our Russian friend at all times. I’ll call in support, but if he talks, I want you to tell me what he says. If it’s in Russian, make sure you record it. Unless you speak Russian?”

“I was terrible with languages in school. English is it. Sometimes I can pull off an Australian accent, mate.” Lewis’s smile slid from his face when Aaron didn’t smile back.

“Just make sure you record everything he says.”

Aaron turned to go, but Lewis called him back.

“Sorry, did you want me to stay all night?”

“No, I want you to stay there until I send someone to relieve you. Then I want you to go home and get a good night’s sleep. I’ll need you to be fresh in the morning.”

“Right. Yes. I will be. And what about you?”

“I’ll stick around Sydney’s place until I’m confident we have enough security.”

Lewis got closer to Aaron and said quietly, “Is she going to be okay?”

“She’s pretty shaken up, but yeah, she’ll be okay. She’s been through worse.”

“Has she? When? Did I miss something? I thought I read everything in the file.”

“Lewis. Relax. You didn’t miss anything. You can just take my word for it.”

A paramedic interrupted. “We need to get the patient to the hospital. He’s lost a lot of blood.”

“Agent Lewis will travel with you.” Aaron slapped Lewis on the back and headed back to the car, pulling out his phone to arrange for backup at Sydney’s apartment.

“You’ll be safe at home tonight,” he said when he pulled the car onto the street.

“You said if things escalated, you’d increase security. Does this mean someone has to sleep in my home now?”

“No. But we’ll make sure no one can get in.”

Syd let out a sigh, and Aaron looked at her in the rearview mirror. “Everything okay? We’ve got people you can talk to if you feel like it’s too much to handle.”

She looked around the interior of the car. “Why am I sitting in the back?”

He studied her for a second in the mirror. “It seemed easier than moving you.”
