“Alone at last.” Chris grinned.

“Yeah.” Her mouth puckered.

“Is there something going on between you two?”

“What? No, of course not. With Aaron? No.”

“You sure? I mean, I’m probably not the best judge, but that was all a bit weird just then.”

“No it wasn’t.”

“It really was.”

“I guess it’s just because we have a past.” Chris’s eyebrows raised. “Not that kind of past. I didn’t tell you before, but we used to be neighbors. When I was a little girl.”

“Seriously? What are the chances? Actually, I could probably create an algorithm to calculate it.”

“No. Don’t.” She laughed. “I guess having that connection from years ago has made things a bit unusual.”

“Not to mention you hated him when he first turned up. Why didn’t you tell me you knew him?”

“Because I was mad and I didn’t want to remember what a good guy he used to be.”

“So you guys were a thing back then?”

“A thing?”

“I’m not up with the latest lingo.”

“No, I told you, we were never a thing. I was a little girl. Look, I don’t want to talk about this anymore. Can we please get this fungus put away? I’ll feel better.”

“Sure thing. I’ll just get it ready to input the code.”

“What’s that room for over there?” She pointed to a small room with a large glass window.

“That room is a lot of things. You can set the climate to suit your needs. Or even use it as a vacuum if need be.”

“Wow. Impressive. I might have to come up with an experiment that requires a vacuum just so I can use it.”

“You should try it on the fungus. You never know.”

“No, I do know what a vacuum will do to it. It would solve all my problems because I would no longer have a dangerous mushroom on my hands. I’d have nothing.”

“I can’t believe you just called it a mushroom.”

Sydney shrugged. “I guess almost dying has loosened me up a bit.”

“I want you to know that I asked for a room in this wing specifically. I didn’t tell you before, but I used to work in this building.”

“You’re kidding.”

“Nope. I helped design this wing too. You’ll be happy with the security here.”

“Does that mean it’s independent? No one watching?”

“Yup. You can set up as much as you need. But they do have one safety net that will need to be cleared up.”

“What’s that?”
