“Pasternak. Have you seen him?”

He looked at the picture again. “No. Definitely not.”

“What about anyone else hanging around? Anyone suspicious?”

“No. She hasn’t seen anyone besides Dr. Pallon, and I believe Myles Cameron visited her.”

“Biotech?”

“Yeah. I can’t believe I missed it. I wish you would have told me, but you’re right. I should have seen it.”

“It happens to the best of us.”

“Not to me. You sure you still want me on this?”

“Is there any reason you can see that you won’t be able to perform your duties to the best of your abilities?”

The wordyesformed in his mouth, but he couldn’t bring himself to give up yet. “No, sir.”

“Okay then, let’s not focus on the past. It’s time to move forward with this.”

“But where do we go from here?”

“Keep doing what you’re doing. I still think you’re the best man for the job. We need more evidence. That’s why she hasn’t been brought in yet. I don’t suppose you could wear a wire?”

“Whatever it takes, although I can almost guarantee she won’t tell me anything she doesn’t want me to know. Hey, what about her supervisor, Pallon?”

“What about him?”

“Could he be a part of this?”

“He’s been cleared. We haven’t found any evidence that he’s involved and unless we do, we leave him out of this.”

“What about the newspaper article?” Aaron said.

“That we don’t know.”

“And I’m not sure we will, but I do have one lead.”

“Then I’ll leave it with you. Keep me updated.”

Aaron trudged out of the office, furious with himself. But he channeled that anger toward Sydney. He was right to be suspicious of her, but because of their past, he hadn’t realized how much.

Be slow to anger. You can’t see everything.

“You sure pick a great time to start communicating,” he mumbled, then ignored the voice whispering in his ear. He’d have to reset. Everything he had allowed himself to feel for Sydney was now obsolete. He had let his memory of her as a vulnerable young girl throw off his ability to do his job well. She wasn’t that girl anymore. She was an adult and she’d have to take responsibility for her actions. He’d make sure of that.

Chapter14

Sydney lookedup and saw Aaron’s face through the glass. The loose smile on his face tightened her stomach and pushed a blush onto her face. It was the sort of look that would have melted her into a puddle as a girl and wasn’t far off doing the same right now.

“You going to let me in?” he called through the door.

“Yeah.” She kept her face pointed at the floor as she walked over. She had to get ahold of herself. His look couldn’t have meant what her stupid brain was construing it as.

She forced a closed-lipped smile on her face when she opened the door. “Hi.”

“I have a proposition to make.”
