“I feel like you’re enjoying torturing me right now.”

“I can’t say it hasn’t made my night better. You know what you want to order?” he asked, letting her off the hook.

“I haven’t had steak in a while. I thought I’d go that way.”

They ordered and Aaron folded his hands on the table.

He bounced between trying to win her over through friendship or flirting. Either way, he had to get her to trust him. If she was with Leo, the flirting might backfire. But he couldn’t explain why she would get so flustered around him. Everything about their interaction said she had feelings for him that went beyond friendship, but he put that out of his mind. That meant nothing.

He settled on working their past connection. It would be safer than the other option.

As they talked, he pushed for stories from her childhood. If she felt close enough to him, something could slip out. He had looked out for her when she was a girl. He needed her to feel that same trust again.

“So tell me what you’ve been up to all these years. You said your mom left your dad? What happened there?”

“Ah, that. Yes. A couple of people at church figured out what was happening, and they were a huge support to my mom. They helped us out and made sure we had somewhere to stay while we were getting everything worked out. It was easier once my dad left town.”

“Do you know where he is now?”

“I never had any contact with him after we left. About a year ago, he had a heart attack and died.”

“How’d you find that out?”

“My mom.”

“How’d she find out?”

“Don’t know. I didn’t ask.”

“Then you went to college?”

“Yup. Turned out I was pretty good at science so I got a full scholarship.”

“You don’t say.”

“Didn’t know I was so smart, did you?”

“I should have paid more attention to your GPA while you were in primary school.”

“You should have. Then you wouldn’t have made the mistake of thinking Syd Davis was a man.” She laughed at his sheepish look. “Don’t worry. I’m over it. It’s just another funny story you and I share.”

“Yeah, but can we keep that one to ourselves? I come off like an idiot.” He laughed.

“No way. I might go speak to Gretta Lakeland and see if she’ll give me a front-page story. I can see the headline now:FBI agent makes a fool of himself.”

“She’d love that. Too much, I’m afraid. So what did you do while you were in college?”

“I studied a lot.”

“What about relationships. You seeing anyone now?”

“No. I don’t have time to meet anyone, let alone build a relationship with them.”

“Really?”

“That surprises you? Even after all that talk about me being a workaholic?”

“It’s just that you’re a beautiful woman. I imagine you get a lot of interest. There must have been a pile of guys after you at college.”
