“I had nothing to do with her outside the lab, no.”

“But did you see anyone as you were leaving or arriving? Do you know of any correspondence she had with anyone outside the lab?”

“What are you suggesting?”

“Unlike you, I happen to know what she’s working on. She was right to keep it secure. It’s dangerous. It could be tempting for her to sell that information to someone outside the lab. Or if she had connections who might be interested in the information, there would be no one to make sure she keeps the information safe.”

Theo stood, his face was a mixture of anger and fear. “Not Professor Davis, no. She would never do anything like that. She wanted to help people, not hurt them, and she was never in it for the money. If you knew her at all, you’d know that.”

Pallon may have gotten Theo the job, but it was clear he was completely loyal to Sydney. He’d have to change tact. “Okay, so Sydney isn’t the bad guy. I believe you.”

“Thank you.” Theo sat.

“I’m sorry to upset you, but I needed to know where you stood before telling you this next part.”

“There’s more?”

“I’m afraid so. But this is highly confidential. I trust you won’t share this with anyone?”

“No. I swear.”

Theo was eager now. Aaron had found his way in. “Last week Sydney was abducted.”

Theo stood again. “What? I — Is she okay? What are you doing to find her?”

“She’s fine. I was there when it happened and I saved her.”

Theo flopped into his seat. “Thank goodness. So she’s okay?”

“She’s fine, yes. We have her very well protected now.”

“So you got the guys who did it?”

“All the men involved are now deceased.”

“You? Did you do that?”

“Mostly.”

“Well … good. Serves them right,” Theo grumbled. “But you said she’s under protection. Do you think there are more involved?”

“We know there are. But our only witness killed himself to protect the identity of those involved. Apparently, whoever is after her will go to great lengths to stay hidden.”

“Wait. You’re not here because you think I had something to do with it, are you? Because I can assure you, I would never do anything to hurt her. I swear.”

“You’re not a suspect, Theo. And we are doing everything in our power to keep her safe, but these guys, they’re determined. If we don’t find them soon … ” He shrugged.

“But you’re the FBI.”

“And we are investigating. But we’re only human and we’ve hit a dead end. That’s why I’m here. If you really care about Professor Davis, I need you to tell me everything you know about her work, and anyone you’ve seen hanging around. Even if it’s small. We don’t want to see anything happen to her, but you might be the only one who can save her.” Maybe he went a bit overboard, but Theo responded the way Aaron hoped.

Theo’s teeth clenched as he paced the room, battling thoughts Aaron waited to hear.

“If I say anything, I could lose my job.”

“Hey, I get it. This is a great job. I mean, look at this place. And you do good work here. If you’re not comfortable sharing what you know, that’s okay. Sydney would understand.”

Theo’s head dropped. “Have you looked into Dr. Pallon?” he mumbled.
