“But they must have known what she had.”

“They did. It was when she had done the further research and found what they found.”

“What did they find?”

“I have no idea. According to Professor Davis, Biotech doesn’t even fully know. Why do you keep asking me about Professor Davis? I told you, Pallon’s the one you have to look into.”

“And I will, but like I said, I need all the facts.”

“Pallon pushed her to sign, but she refused.”

“So maybe it was someone from Biotech that Pallon met with in that car?”

“Maybe, but it looked government. Did you know he used to work for the Department of Defense?”

“I believe he may have mentioned it. And you think that makes him guilty?”

“Guilty of something. I’m certain of it. He must have connections. How else would he have gotten me this job?”

“And you think the government is involved?”

“Look, I don’t know what to think anymore. I’ve told you everything I know. Can I get back to work now?”

“That’s right. You have this nice cushy job to go back to.”

“What else can I do? If I had known what would happen, I would have warned her, but she was already taking measures and I thought she’d be okay. I didn’t know they’d go so far as kidnapping her.”

“And you’ve definitely told no one else what you know? A friend wouldn’t have taken the information to the paper?”

“No. No way. I wasn’t allowed to talk about it. That was the deal. I signed a confidentiality agreement when I took this job. But it’s not worth Sydney’s life.”

“All right. Thanks for your time, Theo. You’ve been very helpful.”

“Am I going to lose my job?”

“That’s not up to me. But I won’t go out of my way to save it. I’ve got an investigation to run and people’s lives are at stake, so I’m going to do what it takes to make sure no one else dies.”

“Okay.”

“Theo, I’m not here to destroy your life. You may get lucky and it won’t get back to your boss. Either way, good luck.”

Aaron left Theo looking forlorn as he hurried out the door, calling Lewis as he went.

“I’ve just finished speaking with Theo.”

“Get anything useful?”

“I think so. Where are we up to with that court order for the newspaper article?”

“Don’t need it.”

“What? She’s cooperated? I don’t believe it.”

“No, the paper printed a retraction today. Gretta said she made the whole thing up.”

Aaron stopped walking. “You’re kidding.”

“Nope.”
