“Late the night he was brought in.”

“But Popov died in the afternoon.”

“Yeah. I know. But when they checked the IV and did the autopsy, they found out that it was such a small amount of soap, it would have taken hours to build up enough to poison him.”

“How many hours?”

“It would have been added to the IV in the early hours of the morning.”

“When Pallon went in. Okay, so there we go. We have a connection. That’s great work.”

“No, it’s not. I should have told you about it.”

“Don’t worry about it. You couldn’t have known. Nothing could have changed what happened. Now, go tell Knightly everything I’ve told you. He’ll know what to do from there. He must have Pallon in custody by now.”

“And what about you?”

“I’ll be fine.” He hung up. Theo was right. It was Pallon all along, but that didn’t let Sydney off the hook. The emails she sent suggested she was involved too. Maybe Pallon wanted to dissolve the partnership? Aaron would have to find a way to make Sydney come clean.

He found her in the living room with her sandwich, explaining the research she was working on. Although she remained vague about the current status of her drug or the ramifications, she had a way of bringing a normally boring, subject to life.

“Sydney? Can I speak with you for a moment?” He’d do what he had to do to get to the truth. He couldn’t keep protecting her when she continued to lie to him. If he had to, he’d bring her in and hand her over.

Chapter18

Sydney followedAaron back into the sunroom. “Did you find out something?”

“Some. It looks like Pallon was the one who killed the Russian in the hospital.”

Sydney dropped into the closest seat. “I can’t believe this. He’s not a killer. It doesn’t make any sense.”

“He has a role in all of this, but I still have a lot of questions. Maybe you can help answer them.”

“I don’t know what I can tell you that you don’t already know. I mean, I think I do know why Chris tried to kill me, if that’s the kind of information you’re looking for.”

Aaron crossed his arms and leaned against a bookcase. “He wanted the weapon.”

“Yeah, but I don’t think it’s for him. I think he was forced to.”

“He was forced to kill you?”

“Yes. I’m telling you, he’s not the sort of man who would kill unless he had no other choice.”

“Sydney, sometimes you think you know a person, but everyone has secrets.”

“I just can’t believe he would do it any other way.”

“If he was coerced, that means someone was putting pressure on him. Do you know who he’s working for or with?”

“No, I don’t. I asked him but he wouldn’t tell me. Maybe the Russians?”

“Why would he work with the Russians?”

“I don’t know. The money? He had a small mishap that nearly ended his career a few years back.”

“Nearly?”

“He’s still working, obviously. But he’s not as well respected as he used to be. That’s my only guess.”
