“No.”

“You’re more alert than I expected. With your injuries and the painkillers they must have you on, I didn’t think you’d be this sharp.”

“Sorry to disappoint you.”

“You’re not—”

When Charlotte grunted in frustration, the man stood, clearing his throat. “I should leave you two alone.”

“There’s no need.” Maddy laughed weakly. “You should have seen your face when she walked in. Although I don’t know why you’re so surprised.”

“Probably because you didn’t tell me you had a twin sister.”

“Yes I did.”

“No, you said you had a twin named Charlie. I thought Charlie was your brother.”

Charlotte smirked, and he noticed. “She likes messing with people. Don’t take it personally.”

“Is that what you were doing?” he asked Maddy. “Messing with me?”

“No. I just didn’t bother explaining. Charlie and I haven’t seen much of each other in a while. I didn’t think it mattered.” She looked at Charlotte. “Charlie, this is Will. He’s my partner. Will, Charlie.”

“It’s nice to meet you, Will. I didn’t know Maddy was seeing anyone.”

Will made a face. “What? No.”

Maddy laughed, then grimaced. “My work colleague, not my boyfriend.”

“We’re doing an undercover operation together.” He glanced at Maddy. “Or at least, we were.”

“Oh.” Charlotte walked closer to him to shake his hand. “It’s still nice to meet you. But it’s Charlotte. I don’t go by Charlie anymore.”

“Oh, that’s right,” Maddy said. “The drugs helped me forget for a moment that you abandoned our family and changed your name.”

Charlotte took a second to compose herself. It was an old argument, and she was tired of explaining herself. “You really want to do this again?”

“Why not? Are you ashamed?”

“I already told you. I had no choice. And I didn’t change my name. Charlotte is the name on my birth certificate.”

“But not Thomson.”

“I did what I had to do.”

“Of course you did. Will, let me tell you a story about my little sister—”

“Little by four minutes.”

“Four minutes is four minutes.”

Will crossed his arms. “Maddy, I don’t really want to get in the middle of your family issues.”

“No, you’ll like this. It’s a good story. My little sister apparently singlehandedly stopped a human trafficking ring and put her own life in terrible danger. So terrible, in fact, that she had to enter witness protection.”

“I’m not in witness protection, and you know it.”

“Then what are you in?”
