“No.” Will laughed. “They’re fine.”

She marched up to him and punched him in the arm. “Stop doing that to me.”

“It’s so easy. And it’s amusing.”

“Great.”

“If it makes you feel better, I’m impressed with your notes.”

“It’s what I do for work. I read through a book or a script and make notes before I start.”

“Smart. It’s good to see.” He stood and held out his arm. “Shall we?”

“Yeah. Let’s get this over with.”

“That’s the spirit.”

Chapter12

Will puthis hand on the small of Charlotte’s back as they stepped off the elevator. She straightened at his touch.

“Now remember,” he said. “You own the world.”

“Do I?”

“Maddison believes she does. That means you do too.”

“Right. It takes some getting used to. I feel like I need to give myself permission to play this part.”

“All we’re doing is having dinner. That’s why I wanted to do this. The last job we did was a start, but this is your chance to play Maddison with no pressure.”

“No pressure? Does that mean if I screw up, I still get another chance?”

“I’ll consider it.” He didn’t know why he enjoyed giving her such a hard time, except that somehow the derisive look on her face was captivating. Maddy and Charlotte shared some expressions, but that one belonged to Charlotte alone.

“You had better not make fun of me if I get it wrong.”

“Now why would I do a thing like that?” He gave her a sideways glance, and she laughed. “Seriously, though, I want you to relax. You have nothing to worry about from me. Show me what you’ve got.”

She slipped her arm through his, possibly to steady herself. Or maybe it was for the part. Either way, he pulled her closer. He would never have done that with Maddy, and it left him unsettled.

Charlotte had something about her that he couldn’t put into words. When they’d first met, it had been startling how similar she was to her sister. But that had changed. And he couldn’t decide how he felt about it.

Focusing on the lobby, he forced himself to loosen his arm. She was Maddison now, not Charlotte. They had more important things to focus on than his conflicted feelings toward her.

“And you’re my personal assistant on this outing, right?” Charlotte said, pulling him from his thoughts. “So I can boss you around?”

“If that’s what you want.”

“Oh, yes. I do believe I’d like that.”

“It’s only for the part, don’t forget.”

“Whatever you say.”

They walked together across the lobby toward the golden-lit entry to the hotel’s restaurant. He’d had to pull a few strings to get a reservation for tonight.

She tugged on his arm to slow him. “Everyone’s looking at us,” she said.
