“The guards. Or did you incapacitate them? Never mind. It doesn’t matter.” If Will was safe, then that meant she was too. “I’m really glad to see you’re okay.”
He hurried over to her and pushed the barrel of the gun down so it aimed at the floor.
“Thank you,” Tony said. “That was close.”
“No kidding,” Will said. “Sorry about that. I didn’t know she had a gun.”
“What? What’s going on?” Something wasn’t right, and when Will tried to take the gun from her, she pulled away, lifting it to aim at him.
“Charlotte, what are you doing?”
“You’re in this with him? Have you been deceiving Maddy this whole time?” She looked at Tony. “Are you and Will working together?”
“Charlotte,” Will said. “That’s not what this is. This isn’t what it looks like.”
“No?”
“No. You shouldn’t have brought a gun. You don’t even know how to use one.”
“How do you know?”
“I can tell.”
“I know how to pull a trigger.”
“Exactly why you should give it to me before someone gets hurt.”
“No way.”
“Give me the gun, and I’ll explain everything.”
“I’m not stupid. I’m sorry I messed up your plan, but you’re going to let me out of here, or I’ll shoot you both.”
“Please”—He pressed a hand to his forehead—“Please give it to me. This man isn’t Antonio. His name’s Tony Ferrero. He’s a business associate of mine, but he’s not the one Maddy and I have been after.”
“I don’t understand.”
“I set you up.”
“I know. That’s pretty obvious.”
“Maddy and I have worked with Tony for years. He is a wealth of information and also a friend. I asked him for a favor.”
“Why?”
“I—I needed to see if you were ready. I don’t want you meeting the real Antonio until I’m sure.”
“How do I know you’re telling the truth?”
“You could call Maddy,” Tony offered.
“I’m not putting down the gun to make a phone call. I’m not an idiot.”
“May I?” he said, pointing at his pocket. “I can call her and put her on speaker.”
“Okay. Do it.”
Tony slowly pulled the phone from his pocket and made the call. It almost rang out before Maddy answered.
