“I’m sorry.”

She shook her head, tears forming in the corner of her eyes. “I thought she was exaggerating. I thought it was some small thing she blew way out of proportion. What am I gonna do?” She pushed up on the bed, then grimaced and thumped her fist on it. “How could I not see this coming?”

“None of us could.”

“Does that mean he was the one who had me attacked? He wanted me out of the picture?”

“Yeah. He needed you alive but unable to attend the meeting so you’d have to send your sister in your place. He used you to lure her out because he couldn’t find her.”

“All this time, she was telling me the truth. She really did need to hide from him.”

“Yeah.”

“It’s my fault.”

“It’s no one’s fault. There’s no way you could have predicted this.”

“Where is she now?” Peter asked.

Will looked at him, then Maddy. “Who is he exactly?”

“He trained me a long time ago.”

“It wasn’t that long ago,” Peter said.

“Not long enough.”

“What does that mean?” Will said. “You want me to get rid of him?”

“No. I trust him with my life. I just don’t want to hear what he has to say about certain things.”

“Like what?”

“Jesus.” Peter smirked.

Will raised his eyebrows. “Is he serious?”

“Unfortunately.”

“Man, God must really be after you. All these people around you wanting to talk to you about God? I don’t know how you can continue to resist.”

“It’s easy. And there are more important things going on right now than my faith.”

“Not really,” Peter said. “Now’s probably the worst time to rage against God. He may be the only one who can help.”

“He’s right,” Will said. “Antonio has her at his house, and I fully intend to try to rescue her, but I don’t know if I can do it alone, and you’re in no condition to help.”

“But I am,” Peter said.

“You’re up for a rescue mission?”

“Always.”

“You don’t have to do this,” Maddy said. “You’ve got Jemi to think of.”

“I’m going.”

“Peter.”
