Caleb: I love you, but stop trying to hook me up with your single friends

Sloane: fine

Sloane: I didn’t tell her anything about you other than the basics. I’m a bitch but I’m not that kind of bitch

Caleb: you’re my bitch and I love you for it

Sloane: right back atcha

THUD.

Caleb: gotta go

I tossed my phone onto the couch and raced upstairs and into my bedroom.

“The fuck?”

Graham was on the floor next to my bed, the sheets tangled around his legs.

“Ow,” he whimpered.

“What did you do?”

“I fell, genius.” He didn’t fight as I got him back on the mattress.

“Did you try to get up?”

“I was having a bad dream. I think I rolled out.”

“It’s almost time for your meds anyway. Drink some water and I’ll get them.”

“Not thirsty.”

“Don’t care. Drink.” I swiped the glass of water off the nightstand and pressed it into his hand.

Petulantly, he put it to his lips and gulped down half of it.

“Good boy.”

I’d meant it as a joke, but something moved through my stomach at the quick intake of his breath and the way his eyes snapped up to mine.

Hurriedly, I strode into the bathroom and grabbed his pills.

What the fuck? His reaction had been weird enough, but mine was even more confusing. Saying ‘good boy’ or ‘good girl’ to my friends was something I did all the time. Usually I got an eyeroll or a sarcastic comment in response.

Shaking it off, I brought him his pill and waited as he took it.

“Do you want to go back to sleep?” I asked as he finished his water.

He shook his head and put the empty glass on the night table.

“Hungry?”

“Not really.”

“Can you handle something light? I made soup.”

“Yeah. I think so.”
