The interior of Crimson looked like a cross between a cheap theme park and a Vegas comedy club. There hadn’t been work done on it in years.
What the hell was going on?
Gray: I’ll be there
I sent my reply to Biggs and went to my new messages.
Nick: did you see biggs text?
Nick: is this a good thing? Should I panic?
Gray: don’t panic until we know what’s going on
Here I was telling Nick not to panic when I was seconds away from a complete breakdown if I didn’t get some good news soon. The irony was not lost on me.
Nick: I dont like waiting
Nick: why couldnt he just text it to us?
Gray: because biggs is old enough to remember a time when calling people and speaking face to face was the only way to communicate
Nick: gross. Glad i didnt have to live through that
I chuckled, my bad mood lifting as the reply bubbles appeared in the thread. Nick might only be a year younger than me, but his wide-eyed innocence and his unfailingly happy outlook on life never failed to soothe me.
He was the kid I wished I’d had the chance to be. The kid my little brother should have gotten to be.
Nick: how old do you think he is?
Gray: not sure somewhere in his thirties
Nick: god can you imagine being 30? Like what do you even do with yourself?
Gray: the same things you’d do at 29 would be my guess
Nick: its just so… adult. I know when Im 30 and shit happens I’ll be running around like “wheres the adult? I need an adult” and then it’ll hit that *Im* the adult and I just dont see that happening
Gray: how many coffees have you had today?
Nick: including the one Im drinking now? 6
Nick: or is this 7? Cant remember but not as many as usual
Gray: remember we talked about your caffeine intake?
Nick: yeah, but Im drinking water like you told me to - 1 glass of water for 1 coffee. Its making me pee like crazy. And half of them were iced coffee! Iced coffee doesnt count because its like coffee juice
Gray: did you eat today?
Nick: I forgot
Nick: maybe that’s why Im extra buzzy rn
Nick: so I have a random question
I smiled affectionately at my phone. Texting with Nick could be a crazy ride some days, but I was used to his rapid-fire topic changes.
Gray: sure, what’s up?
