“Same place?” she questions.

“Yeah. The beach house.”

“Yeah, I can do that.”

“Then get here. They won’t look for you here. I’ll figure out what to do next,” I tell her, even as the alcohol sloshes around my head. The line goes dead, and so does another piece of my heart. They found her because I didn’t follow through with my plan. They found her because I was too stupid and selfish to finish it.

“What’s goin’ on?” Grave asks, nodding toward the phone. I scrub my hand over my face before I sigh and look back at him.

“Kyla’s in trouble.”

“Thought that was taken care of?”

“It was until I didn’t kill the motherfuckers. They found her.”

“Fuck, man. Now what?”

“Now, I get her back here and handle it from there.”

“How are you gonna do that when you can’t get your ass out of the bottom of a bottle?” I huff a breath and lean back, wondering the same goddamn thing.

“What the fuck do I do now?” I ask more of myself than him. He laughs. Straight-out laughs. I flip him off and keep my head laid back on the back of the couch.

“You better make this shit right,” Grave tells me. I sit up now and look at him.

“You think I don’t know that? I dropped the goddamn ball on this one. I made a mistake.”

“Yeah, one that could cost her life. You know Marcos doesn’t play like that. She’s been gone for five years, right?”

“Yeah. About that.”

“Fuck. She’s gonna be in some deep shit with them.”

“No, she isn’t. I’m not going to let that happen.”

“How the hell are you gonna stop it?” he asks. I know he’s as aggravated as I am. I can hear it in his tone, but that doesn’t mean he’s pissed off more than I am.

“Just like I said. I’m not going to let that shit happen to Kyla. I helped her once, and I’ll do it again. New life, new everything,” I tell him.

“You think that’s what she wants? She had a life. For five fuckin’ years, brother. She had a life you told her was impenetrable, and now she’s on the run. This is fucked up, Mystic.”

“Don’t you think I know that motherfucker? I know that! I fucked up, Grave! What the fuck do you want me to do?” I roar at him.

“I want you to get out of that damn slump and handle business. You have the manpower. You have the backup. All you need is to get yourself straight.”

“I’ll try.”

“No. Fuck that I’ll try bullshit, Mystic. You get off your ass and handle this shit before that girl gets hurt.” With that, he slams his bottle on the table in front of him and storms out the front door. I listen as the door slams behind him and sigh. I lean forward, resting my elbows on my knees, head in my hands. I’m a complete fuck up. I should have known better. I should have handled this shit a long time ago.

“You’re so fucking stupid,” I mumble to myself. “So fucking stupid.”

Look what I’ve done. I’ve put Kyla in danger. I’ve put her in the line of fire because I was too busy drinking my goddamn life away.

Chapter 12

Kyla

I’m nervous to see him again. I’m nervous that I now have Axel with me. I stand on the porch and raise my hand but stop myself from knocking. I know I need to do this. I know he’s the only one who can help me now.
