“You let them go. Kyla has nothing to do with this,” Jake repeats.

“She has everything to do with this. Marcos found out that you didn’t have anything to do with those goddamn diamonds. He wanted you left alone, but then she ran from me. And I would have never expected her to run to you.”

“Because you’re an idiot.”

“Laugh it up, Mystic. This will be your last chance.”

“Will it?” he asks him. I hear the faint sounds of motorcycles in the distance, but it doesn’t register. I ignore the noise and focus on Jake. If this is the last thing I see, I want it to be him. I want to hold my son closely and see Jake’s face. I want to know this wasn’t for nothing. That all of this was for something.

Jeremy laughs as he motions for the guy behind Jake. My heart starts beating rapidly inside me when I feel the gun pressed harder into the back of my head. I can see Jeremy out of the corner of my eye, and I wish to god I could get him to look at me. Remember me. Remember what we had. Something.

“Jeremy, please.”

“Have you resorted to begging now? You were never a beggar back then,” he says as he stands next to me.

“I have a son.”

“A son who will be with you in the afterlife, Kyla. Don’t think I would leave any witnesses this time.”

“Please don’t do this.” Just as I beg him, all hell breaks loose. Shots are fired. Screams can be heard. I tuck Axel into me and move as quickly as I can down the hall and into the bedroom before locking the bathroom door and huddling with him in the closet. I keep my head down, listening to the commotion in the other room. I hear roars and people screaming commands. I don’t know who they are or where they came from. I don’t know anything, and that scares me. They could be with Jeremy for all I know. And Jake? I can’t leave Jake, but I can’t leave Axel, either.

I sit him on the shower floor and look at my little boy. So perfect and innocent.

“I need you to listen to mommy, okay?”

“Okay.”

“I need to go find Jake. I need you to stay in here and don’t open the door for anyone, okay?”

“I can do that.”

“I know you can. Play the quiet game and stay super quiet for mommy, okay?” He nods his head, and my heart aches. I have to get to Jake. I have to. I kiss Axel’s head before I climb out of the shower and close the door behind me. I sneak to the bathroom door and open it, relocking it as I go out and pulling it closed. My heart is hammering in my chest, a thousand miles a minute. I grab the gun I’ve seen Jake keep near his desk, and I’m ready.

I slink out the door listening as the screams and shots continue. I’m down the hall and around the corner just as I see Jeremy lift his gun, ready to fire.

“Don’t do it! Don’t make me do it, Jeremy!” I scream as loudly as I can. His eyes leap to mine and hold for a long second. Then there’s a shot, and he goes down. It takes me a second to realize I’m the one who pulled the trigger. His gun was aimed at Jake, and I couldn’t let that happen.

In seconds Jake is here, wrapping his arms around me and taking the gun from my hands. The noise slowly subsides as I cry.

Chapter 21

Mystic

“Police are bein’ dealt with, clean up crew is on the way. Let's move on her father sooner rather than later,” Grave reports as I hold onto Kyla and Axel.

“Thanks, Grave. We need a minute.”

“Of course.” I made the call quickly when I heard the first noise. I could feel it in my blood; it was them. I knew. I knew I had to get back up here quickly, and they were close. Grave was out here for something else, and I knew that. The Soulless Bastards and Royal Devils were local to me and were here in no time. I’m thankful for them. I’m thankful they got here when they did.

“He found me,” she whispers.

“It’s all over now. I’m going to get your father, and that’s it. Then it’s all over,” I tell her.

“Will it be? How do we live like this, Jake?”

“The same way we’ve been living. Life goes on, Kyla. Our lives, Axel’s life, goes on. We have to see that,” I tell her. I won’t let her fall into the depression I did. I won’t let her hit rock bottom because I’m here, and I’m ready to lift her up when she needs it.

“I don’t know what I feel, Jake.”
