“You’re so wrong for doing that and not following through.”

“You want me to follow through?” I ask her. I stand from the chair and walk around, holding my hand out to her. She glances around, but Jenny is off with her man, so there is no worry about her coming back. Finally, she slides her hand into mine, and I pull her from her chair before escorting her back into our room.

Chapter 4

Kyla

After my latest round with Jeremy, I cleaned up and pulled my clothes back on. He sits on the bed with his head in his hands, looking worried about something. I finish dressing and walk back into the bedroom before sitting beside him, running my hand up and down his back.

“You okay?”

“I’m just a little stressed. I’m not sure how I feel about this next job.”

“Why? It’s just like any other job, isn’t it?”

“Not really. Your dad has no proof of what this guy has done. You know I don’t like going in blind. I want to know all the details.”

“You want me to talk to him?” I ask him.

“Hell no. That would make it worse.”

“I wonder if that’s why he didn’t send me this time,” I find myself wondering why this job wasn’t given to me. Not that I care. One less thing I have to deal with.

“Probably. He knows you won’t just kill anyone who doesn’t deserve it.” He’s right about that. I won’t. I want concrete proof of what happened and how it happened before I’ll even think about killing someone. Dalamico wasn’t any different. If he didn’t have our diamonds, he was still part of a child pornography ring that needed to be handled. Either way, he was going to die that night.

“I’m sorry, Jeremy. I don’t know what else to do unless I talk to him.”

“It’s fine. I’ll just handle it and move on, right?” Jeremy says as he pulls his clothes back on. I watch how he moves, the way his muscles bunch and shift. If love were part of our world, I would say I love him. I have very strong feelings for him, but I don’t know that love exists for people like us.

“Not the first time we’ve had to do it.”

“No, but it’ll be the last. I don’t like not knowing, Kyla. I need to know the death is warranted.”

“I know, and I’m sorry. I don’t know what to say here.”

“You didn’t do it, so you don’t need to say anything. I just needed to vent,” Jeremy says as he watches me. “Come here.” With that simple command, I stand and walk over to him. He wraps his hand around the nape of my neck and pulls my lips to his. Then he’s kissing me like he may never get the chance again. He’s kissing me like I’m the air he needs to breathe, and honestly, I feel the same way. Jeremy and I have been together a little over five years now, and it's been the best five years of my life. The problem is my father. He doesn’t like the fact that we’re together. He doesn’t like Jeremy being anywhere near me, but that’s too bad. As adults, we do what we want, and there is nothing he can do to stop us.

“God, I can’t get enough of you,” he whispers against my lips.

“I feel the same.”

“Good. I’m glad,” Jeremy tells me with a smile. One last kiss, and we both know we need to get going. He pulls back and releases his hold on me. I grab my gun and slide it into the back of my jeans before heading for the door. I need to meet with my father, and I’m not looking forward to it.

I stalk down the hallway toward his office and knock when I reach the door. He calls to me to enter.

“Hey,” I say as I close the door behind me.

“Tonight, we kill someone who’s been a thorn in my side.”

“Who is we?” I ask, raising an eyebrow. Last I heard, I wasn’t invited to this party.

“Well, not you but the rest of the men. I have other plans for you,” he replies.

“Which are?”

“I want you to go speak to Mr. Michaels. I think he may know something about our missing diamonds.”

“Michaels? Really? I didn’t peg him for the stealing type,” I tell him.
