Page 2 of A Childhood Crush

“You better not,” I warned him. “I don’t want Caroline kicking my ass. She’s scary.”

He grinned. “I know. That’s why I love her.”

I shook my head. “To think, you almost didn’t get her because you’re so damn stubborn. You had this idea about her, and you were dug in. You were convinced she was the spawn of Satan here to destroy your life. You were so stressed out thinking you had to be in the same room with her. Remember?”

“I do.” He nodded. “It’s crazy, right? I don’t know how it happened, but we just started to see each other in a different light. We started to talk more and understand each other better, and before we knew it, we were falling in love.”

“You mean you fell into bed and when she wasn’t calling you an asshole, you realized she wasn’t so bad after all.”

He grinned. “Something like that. Once I figured out how to get her to stop screaming at me, it wasn’t so bad.”

“I still think it’s wild,” I said. “I’m happy for you, it’s just hard to get my head around you marrying the woman you were so adamant you hated. You nearly skipped out on the chance to be a godfather because you didn’t want to share the responsibility with her.”

“Not all of us were lucky enough to give our heart to the boss’s daughter as a four-year-old.”

I frowned. “What?”

“You know what?” He laughed. “You know you’re just waiting for your moment.”

“My moment?” I asked.

“Your moment when you get what your heart has desired since you were a wee lad,” he joked. “Kneehigh to a grasshopper.”

“I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

“Sure.” He grinned. “We’ll go with that. I’ll pretend there isn’t a pretty little thing you’re not interested in. We’ll just all turn the other way when your eyeballs pop out of your head when you see her. Why not just admit it to yourself?”

“Because there is nothing to admit.”

“She’s cute and she’s into you as well,” he said.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” I said. “Let’s get back to the reason I’m sitting in your office. I’ve got shit to do. I can’t sit around and listen to you carry on about something you don’t know about.”

He just shook his head. “Fine. I have a meeting scheduled with the city on Friday. I need you there for that. I hate when they talk in all their weird codes and shit. They act like they’re so much smarter than I am. I would love to remind them I’m the guy sitting on a fortune because I was smart enough to figure out how to make real estate work. They hate me because I’m successful.”

“They hate you because you’re an asshole that acts like you own the world,” I countered. “But I’ll be there.”

“I am not an asshole.”

I gave him a look that said otherwise. “Sure, yeah, we’ll go with that.”

While we were working, there was a soft knock on the door and a second later it opened. I felt the same strange, crawling feeling in my stomach. The feeling contradicted everything I had just said to Leo. The beautiful young lady with long dark hair walked into the office with a bright smile on her face. I didn’t say a word. I couldn’t. I was struck speechless like I had been hit by lightning.

I happened to look up and catch Leo grinning like a damn fool.

ChapterTwo

Emmy

“Hi.” I smiled nervously.

They were looking at me like I had two heads. I casually rubbed my nose to make sure there wasn’t a booger. Maybe I was just being self-conscious because it washim. Luca, AKA Luke. Luke had been my boyfriend in my mind since I was five. He was the older boy I fell in love with when I was a little, obnoxious girl following him all over the grounds.

“Hello, Emmy.” Leo nodded with a smile.

“Hi.”

“What are you doing here?” Luke asked.
