He cringed. “Joey called and asked me if he could throw us a party.”

“When did he make this call?” I asked.

“About a month ago,” he replied.

“Not long after Emmy moved out and stopped talking to her dad.” I sighed. “You know exactly what this is.”

“Yeah, I didn’t realize that before, but I get it,” he said. “What’s going on with the two of them?”

“She didn’t give me specifics, but he wants her to take over the family business,” I said.

“No!”

“Exactly.” I nodded. “She is struggling but damn, she’s stubborn. She’s not going to let anyone help her. But she wants to stay away from him. She doesn’t want him pushing his stuff on her.”

“Do you think he’s going to start shit if he shows up tonight?”

“I don’t know. I hope not.”

“That puts you in the middle,” he said. “Who are you going to back up?”

“Is that even a question?” I asked.

He smirked. “Just thought I would ask. But there’s your dad to consider.”

“My dad?” I questioned.

“Yeah, you know where his loyalties lie,” he said. “If you choose to back Emmy in this, you’re looking for trouble with Joey and your dad.”

I shook my head. “It doesn’t matter. Joey told me from the very beginning I was to never let anything happen to her. I was supposed to look out for her. I took it to heart. That doesn’t change now.”

“Good, she needs you,” he said.

I glanced over to where she was talking with Julia, Lena, and Caroline. She looked to be having a great time. I couldn’t help but watch her. She changed recently. She was bolder, brighter, and seemed a lot more confident. I was sure that had something to do with moving out and getting on her own feet.

“How’s Caroline doing with all the wedding planning?” I asked.

“I think she’s a lot more settled,” he replied. “At least she seems like it. She’s not so stressed. I’m hoping we can ride out the next couple of months in peace. All the plans have been made. We can just kick back and relax.”

“Good luck with that,” I scoffed. “I’ve watched plenty of romance movies with Emmy. Many of those plots involved weddings. The women stress out and freak out about all the planning and stuff. There’s usually some big, dramatic thing that happens and the couple breaks up because it’s so stressful. It’s not stress-free.”

“Thanks for that,” he muttered. “I feel so much better. You suck at being the best man, by the way.”

“You say that, but just wait until the bachelor party,” I replied, waggling my eyebrows.

“I’m a little worried about what you have planned.” He chuckled.

I grinned, “Oh, don’t worry about it. It’s going to be epic. Trust me.”

He looked at me skeptically. “That’s what you said about your last bachelor party plan, and I ended up handcuffed to a stripper with a bottle of tequila.”

I smirked. “Hey, it was a wild night, wasn’t it? And I don’t think I actually planned that party. We were guests.”

“Let’s try to keep it a little more low-key. Maybe just hit up a few bars and play some pool or something. I don’t want strippers or any of that shit. Caroline would kick my ass if I saw strippers.”

“Come on, man, this is your last chance to let loose before you tie the knot,” I said. “We have to do something crazy.”

He shook his head. “I don’t know if I’m up for crazy. I just want to have a good time with my friends and not wake up the next morning with a hangover and a regrettable tattoo.”
