I nodded, grateful for Leo’s advice. Maybe he was right. Maybe I needed to stop obsessing over my girlfriend’s strange behavior and focus on myself for a while. But it was hard, especially since I loved her so much. I just wanted to make everything right between us. I didn’t think this was just a boyfriend worrying about his girlfriend. IknewEmmy. Something was definitely off.

“Have you heard anything more from your dad?” he asked.

I shook my head. “Nope.”

“Do you think he’s going to try and break you and Emmy up?”

I took a deep breath. “I don’t know,” I said. “I think he might if her dad tells him to. My dad is loyal to her dad. Joey says, ‘jump’ and my dad asks, ‘how high.’”

Leo raised an eyebrow. “That’s messed up, man. You can’t let your dad control your life like that.”

“I know.” I sighed. “But it’s complicated. My dad has always been like this. He thinks he knows what’s best for me, even if it’s not what I want. Just like Emmy’s dad thinks he knows what’s best for her.”

“Except you know Emmy better than anyone on this planet,” he said. “I think you have to stand your ground. You know what makes her smile. And we all know you would walk through fire to take care of that woman.”

“Damn straight.” I nodded.

My phone vibrated in my pocket. I quickly pulled it out, hoping it was Emmy telling me to come home. When I called her earlier, she made it very clear she was busy and didn’t want to be bothered. She said she was working and needed to focus. I agreed to stay out for a couple of hours, but I really wanted to be home with her. I found myself always wanting to be with her. I was one of those guys who lived and breathed for his girlfriend. If I was Leo and he was me, I would be giving him shit about how stupid he was acting.

“Is it her?” he asked.

I read the message from my father. “No. My dad.”

“What did he say?”

“I need to end things with Emmy,” I said.

“You do?”

“No.” I threw him a look. “That’s what my dad’s message was.”

I quickly tapped out a response and put my phone back.

“What did you say to him?”

“Simple.” I shrugged. “No.”

He laughed. “Good man.”

Two seconds later, my phone was going off again. I pulled it out. “You are opening up something unpredictable,” I read the message aloud.

“Damn, is that a threat?” Leo asked with a scoff. “Is that your dad threatening you?”

“Kind of feels like it,” I said.

Before I could put the phone away, another message came through.

“Now, what?” he asked.

“He says messing with the boss’s daughter is a mistake.” I quickly tapped out my reply and put it away.

“What’d you say?”

I grinned. “I told him he’s not my boss.”

Leo chuckled and took a drink of his beer. “I guess if you don’t show up to work in the morning, I’ll send out the dive team. Your father will want your body for a proper burial.”

“Very funny,” I said dryly.
