It was a lie. There was a counteroffer on my desk, but I wasn’t paying attention to it. He actually laughed. “Yeah, that’s what you were doing.”

“Leave me alone,” I muttered. “I have work to do.”

“I know you’re sitting in here thinking about her,” he said.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about.” I shrugged.

“Bullshit,” he said. “I’ve noticed. I saw it with my own two eyes.”

“What did you see?”

“The way you look at Emmy,” he said. “She looks at you the same way.”

“What?” I frowned. “No, she doesn’t.”

“She does.” He nodded. “I saw it. You’re so used to seeing her as Emmy your friend, you can’t see her as Emmy the beautiful woman who thinks you’re hot.”

“You think?” I asked. “Are you sure you’re not just seeing something because you’ve got hearts in your eyes?”

“Maybe it’s because I have hearts in my eyes I can see clearly,” he said. “Every time you guys came to visit me in the hospital, I saw her looking at you with genuine concern. Caroline told me Emmy damn near took out doctors and nurses who didn’t jump to help you. She’s little but she’s fierce when it comes to you.”

“Because we’re friends,” I said. “I’m not going to deny we don’t have a strong friendship. We do. We are very close.”

“You love her,” he said.

He wasn’t wrong. “As a friend.”

“I think you’ve been in love with Emmy for years, and you’re too scared to do anything about it,” he said bluntly.

“How do you know that?” I asked curiously. I hoped he was going to give me some kind of answer that made it clear because I honestly didn’t know. Was it in love or love? Did I love her because she was my best friend or did Iloveher? Like the Caroline and Leo love. The kind of love that involved seeing each other naked. That was important.

“Come on, man, it’s written all over your face every time you’re around her. I know you two have been friends for a long time, but I think it’s time you took a chance and asked her out.”

“I don’t know, I don’t want to risk our friendship,” I said. “That’s a big risk. And our fathers would probably frown on that.”

“I understand that, but you never know what could happen,” he said. “Emmy might feel the same way about you, and you’re missing out on a chance to be with someone you really care about.”

“But what if she doesn’t feel the same way?” I asked. “Won’t that make it weird?”

“If you ask and she shuts you down, you’ll at least have closure, and you can move on,” he said. “But if you don’t try, you’ll never know, and you’ll always wonder what could have been. You’re always going to wonder what if.”

“I guess you have a point,” I said reluctantly. “How do I even bring it up to her?”

“Just be honest and straightforward.” He shrugged. “Tell her that you’ve been in love with her for years and that you want to see if there could be something more between you two. And if she doesn’t feel the same way, be respectful of her feelings and don’t pressure her into anything. Let her know you want to be friends with her regardless of what she says.”

“She’s been my best friend for years,” I pointed out.

“Besides me,” he added.

I smirked. “Besides you. But I can’t help the way I feel about her. She’s been there for me through everything, and I just can’t shake the feeling that there’s something more there. I mean, we’ve always had a great relationship. We can talk about anything, we make each other laugh, and we’re always there for each other when we need it. But lately, I’ve been seeing her in a different light. I can’t help but notice how beautiful she is, and how much I enjoy spending time with her.”

“I know. I’ve seen it. Caroline has as well. She asked me if you guys were a thing.”

“What did you tell her?”

“I told her you’re a pussy and you’d never ask her out.” He grinned.

“Fuck you.”
