“Is Leo okay?” Caroline asked.

“Leo is fine,” he answered and looked at me. “Everyone is fine.”

“Why are you here?” I snapped.

“I’d like to talk to you,” he said. “Will you take a walk with me?”

“No,” I answered.

“Emmy, we need to talk,” he said.

“I’m enjoying my weekend,” I said. “You interrupted our dinner.”

“I think we were done eating,” Julia said.

I frowned at her. “I’m not.”

“I think you should go take a walk,” Caroline said. “It’s a nice night.”

They were totally ganging up on me and taking his side. “Guys,” I said. “It’s cold out there. I’m not dressed for a stroll.”

Caroline smiled and shrugged. “It’s just a talk.”

I rolled my eyes and looked up at Luke. He did look like a lost puppy. I could never resist those gorgeous green eyes. Ever. “Fine.” I sighed. “Just so we’re clear, I’m not happy about this.”

“Don’t do anything we wouldn’t do,” Caroline called out as I got to my feet.

“Thanks, guys,” Luke said. “You all look very fresh and clean.”

I groaned and rolled my eyes. “They’ve already sided with you. You don’t need to kiss their asses.”

We stepped outside under the soft lights that lit the paths between the cabins. I had no intention of actually going for a walk. The sight of him was a balm for my wounded soul. I had missed him so much, but he wasn’t supposed to be here. We were broken up. I was on my girls’ trip. I tried to gather my wits, but it was difficult when the man I still loved was standing right in front of me. His chiseled features were tense as he gazed down at me, his green eyes searching mine.

“Luke, what are you doing here?” I asked, trying to sound casual.

He didn’t answer right away, instead leading me away from Caroline’s cabin. “I came to talk to you,” he finally said, his voice low.

I swallowed hard, my heart racing. “Talk about what?”

“Us,” he said simply. “I need to know if there’s any chance for us to work things out.”

I bit my lip, tears pricking at the corners of my eyes. “I don’t know, Luke. It’s not that simple.”

“Why not?” he demanded, his eyes flashing.

“You know why!”

“Please,” he said. “Give me five minutes. You can’t just throw me away. You can’t just walk away from nearly thirty years of friendship. Listen to me.”

I sighed. “Fine.”

ChapterTwenty-Nine

Luke

Ihad one chance to do this. One chance to get it right. We slowly walked toward the rocky beach. I saw her shiver and automatically reached for her. It was second nature, something I had done a million times before. She stiffened and pulled back. I was about to pull my arm back when she leaned into me.

“I’m sorry to crash your party,” I said. “I just couldn’t take it anymore. I had to talk to you. I had to try and fix this. You might not want to be with me, but we said we wouldn’t let anything come between our friendship. This has been eating at me. We have to clear the air.”
