She grabbed his hand and squeezed. “The best.”

He smiled at her reassuring words, and the comforting silence continued.

Thomas had been her life preserver when she thought all was lost. He understood and came to her aid even when she had admitted her betrayal.

What made her heart even fuller was that in the small moments that they had shared together at the hospital, her father accepted him as well.

Thomas was there for her when her father couldn’t be, and he saw that. His approval meant more to Lorena than anything, especially given everything that they had gone through.

She was happy that, for once, everything seemed to have fallen together when it felt as though nothing ever would.

There had been death, close calls, and many threats, yet here she was. Alive and well with her father on the mend and the love of her life by her side, never faltering.

Things don’t have to be like the movies. There doesn’t have to be a mass misunderstanding. If it’s meant to be, it will be.

She tightened her grip on Thomas’s hand again, thankful he was as understanding as he had been. She was positive that she would not have survived this without him.

Thomas pulled up in front of the house and opened her door for her.

“Here we are. Home sweet home until the end.” He smiled and held out his hand.

She took it and walked beside him into their forever home.

“You know, I didn’t think this place would ever feel like somewhere other than a place of business, but with you here …” Thomas left the sentence unfinished and simply gave her a wide smile as he opened the door.

Even though Lorena had been here many times since accepting her job, it felt like a brand-new place today.

It was theirs. A home that she would share with someone she loved and would build a future with. She never felt more at peace or safer than when she walked through the threshold.

When Lorena stepped through, she saw boxes in the corner neatly labeled.

She walked over to them and peeked through, suspicious after reading the marked boxes. “Are these my things?”

“Some of them,” Thomas smirked. “While we were at the hospital, I had some of my females gather things accordingly and bring them over. I figured that they would know best rather than me sending the usual men.”

Lorena gave him a questioning look, narrowing her eyes.

“No, no. I made sure it was only some of the females who thought highly of you. The ones I would trust. None of the others were allowed in.”

Lorena relaxed. Happy he knew why she had been on edge for a moment.

“Besides, none of that will matter soon, anyway.” He tucked her hair back behind an ear. “It’s you and me. You are to be my mate, and all will accept this or suffer the consequences.”

“That sounds harsh.”

“It does, but it’s the way we operate. They know that as well as I do.”

She kissed him. “I want to do it right. Your way. The pride’s way.”

Thomas’s head pulled back for a moment in slight shock. “Really?”

“Yes.”

“We don’t have to, I hope you know. We can keep it simple or do a little thing that you think is traditional.”

“How different could it be?”

She saw Thomas think about it for a moment before answering. “Not too different, I would assume. I don’t know for sure. But the whole pride will be there, and there may be a couple shifter specific things that are said or done to seal our mating.”
