“And how would this help me?”

He chuckled and turned his phone call into a video call. “Hey,” he said. “I’m Canaan. Nice to meet you, Elizabeth.” He gave her a little wave.

“If this is all a ploy to see what I look like, I give you points for creativity,” she grumbled.

“I don’t expect you to turn on your camera if you don’t want to. I just wanted to show you. I’m Canaan Wolverton.”

“Could be a deep fake. You’re clearly a gifted hacker.”

He grinned at her. “Your mind is extremely sharp, Queenie.”

“Oh, fine.”

Soon, his phone’s screen was filled with Elizabeth Mooney’s face. Canaan had to bite down on his tongue in shock.

He wanted Elizabeth … Queen_Luna … to be beautiful, but he could never have expected her to be so damn delicious. Even though she had clearly been crying, she was stunning. Her green eyes were shining, and her lush mouth was made to be kissed. It took no small amount of effort to push away his immediate attraction.

“Hi,” he repeated. “What’s up?” It was a cheesy line, and he could’ve kicked himself. He never claimed to be a smooth guy.

“Hi,” she smiled shyly. “So. This is what you do with your free time? Who are you, anyway?”

“I’m basically Bat Man if he were a gaming geek who prefers to do his crime-fighting from behind a screen than on the streets of Gotham.” The sound of her laugh made his entire body tingle. “Tell me everything,” he insisted.

Much to his surprise, Elizabeth told him a whole story about her ex that ended up with her being fired that morning.

“Shit, Queenie, that is deep. I can help.”

She shook her head. “I don’t need you to help me. I’ll be fine.”

Oh, she would get his help whether she liked it or not. He wasn’t going to let her go through a whole investigation without any sort of arsenal.

Questers didn’t let their teammates down.

“If you ever have trouble, you need to call me, okay? I don’t care what time it is.”

She snorted. “I really don’t get why you would do that for a stranger.”

“Hey, we’ve been through some shit together, you and I. Remember that war on the Fields of Ner’Hi? We nearly didn’t make it out of there, but if we can go through that, we can go through anything. Together.”

Elizabeth sighed and smiled sadly. “That’s fantasy.”

“Hmm, yeah.Fantasy Warriors. Is there anything more serious than that? Promise me you’ll call if there’s ever any trouble.”

“Fine.”

“I mean it, Elizabeth. I deal with corporate espionage for BMA. IT is my specialty, so if you need anything, you just have to ask.”

“I don’t have the cash to hire you. I need to keep my resources for a lawyer if this is as serious as you say.”

He sighed and shook his head. “Queenie, I wouldn’t charge you. No soldier left behind.” At least he managed to get a grin out of her. She really was beautiful. “Promise you’ll call.”

“I’ll call. Can we keep playing now?”

“Still need to kill some Undead?”

She nodded.

“You got it, Queenie.”
