This was her life now. Asking movie stars what it was like to be the human mate of a wolf shifter.

A lot had changed in very little time. She barely recognized her life or the world she lived in. She shot a sideways glance at Canaan. Wasn’t that exactly what he had said? That he wanted her to make the choice to be his mate when she had time to recover from everything that had happened?

Maybe … just maybe … Canaan was scared that if Elizabeth made a brash choice, she would come to regret it, perhaps even resent it. Canaan might be afraid that she would leave him. The fear had to come from somewhere, but she couldn’t quite put her finger on it.

She opened her mouth to ask another question, but in the end, she thought better of it. PlayingFantasy Warriorswhile chatting was one of her favorite things to do with Canaan, and they both needed it after the court appearance. She settled into her seat and laughed softly.

“What is it?” Canaan asked.

“It’s cute that you think you can defeat those six Undead without my help.” With the push of a few buttons, she was saving Blood Wolf from some major injuries.

Canaan chuckled. “Thanks, Queenie.”

“Anytime,” she replied with a shrug.

“You should play with my BMA team one day,” he said.

“Yeah?”

“You could show them a thing or two about the way this is done. Your teamwork is unparalleled.”

“I don’t know about that.”

“No, it’s true. That’s why it makes me so mad all of this is happening to you. You would have eventually used that algorithm to do great things, but that opportunity was stolen from you.”

“I’ll get it back,” she replied.

He nodded. “It won’t be the same, though, now it’s been used, and it’s out there in the world. It should have been a big victory for you.”

“I’ll have other victories. I’m just at the beginning of my career if you think about it.”

He nodded again. “Maybe tomorrow we can work on that code for the Blood Wolves game.”

“I’d like that,” she beamed. “I’d like to feel useful. Who knows how long it will be before …”

Elizabeth stopped short when the lights and computer went off. The steady whir of electronics stopped just as suddenly. “What the fuck?” Canaan said, jumping to his feet. “Give the backup generator a second …” He frowned and grabbed his phone from his back pocket. “There’s no storm in the forecast.”

“Does this happen?”

He shook his head, his gold eyes darkening. “No. I’m texting Mel.”

“What? Why?”

“Bad feeling. I’ll go check the generator. You go to your bedroom. Get in the closet, and lock the door.”

“The closet door locks?”

He ran a hand back through his hair. “It’s a panic room.”

Her eyes went wide. “A panic room? It’s just a power outage. I’m sure there is a perfectly reasonable explanation for this.”

“The generator should’ve kicked on by now,” he explained. “I don’t like that it hasn’t.”

“Canaan, we are in the middle of nowhere. No one knows where you live.”

“No, but we went to court today. Rylee hit a heavy blow to Jordan and EELS. I was so fucking angry, I didn’t even think to check if we were being followed.”

“You would’ve noticed. You’re two wolf shifters.”
