It reminded me of the way his eyes looked the morning after our first time. His blue orbs told me so much more than words ever could.

I was safe, I was cherished, I was desired… I was his in a way no one else would ever be.

“Q, you going to keep staring at it or put it on?” Sloan laughs, and I catch a twirl of her red, mermaid-style dress from the corner of my eye.

“Ow owww… sexy mama. I kinda feel bad for Liev tonight,” I say, regarding her soon-to-be ex, who she still happens to be going to prom with because she’s the sweetest soul alive. They both recently agreed to call it quits at the end of senior year, and when he asked her to wait till after prom, she couldn’t say no.

Sloan rolls her eyes at my compliment. “Well, he can look, but he can’t touch. I don’t think it's fair to either of us to bang at this point.” While reaching in to pull her boobs up in her strapless bra, she asks, “Is it weird I don’t feel an ounce of sadness for our impending breakup—I mean, who the hell plans a breakup, anyway?”

“No, I think you need to be honest with yourself. You’re still hung up on a particular person and you have a wall put up for anyone who isn’t him...”I’m one to talk, but mine isn’t someone I have a crush on… he’s my best friend. A best friend I recently became extra acquainted with.

“You knew from the start you and Liev were never going anywhere. Hence why you aren’t emotional about your eight-month relationship being over.”

Sloan lets out a deflated sigh. “I know I’m terrible.”

I let out a sarcastic laugh. “Lo, you are far from terrible… why do you say that?”

“Because I felt nothing but relief when we both decided it was best to go ahead and break up after prom instead of at the end of the summer. And you, of all people, know exactly why I felt that way.”

I nod because she’s my best friend… of course I do, but I know she needs to say it.

“I don’t trust myself with Wes being home this summer. The naïve teenager inside me is holding out hope that the kiss we shared last year will turn into more now that I’m older. I know he’s Eli’s best friend, but who cares? He’s one of the best guys we know.”

I walk the short distance to hug her. “No getting upset… you better not mess up that makeup. Plus, have you seen you? Hot girl summer is about to commence, and there is no way he will be able to say no to you. Trust me, he has always been pulled toward you, Lo.”

Thank God when I lean back, I see a smile on her face and a look of daydreaming in her eyes.

“Okay, no more of that. Put your dress on before our moms bust up in here,” she says, walking back into the bathroom with her lip stain in hand.

A few minutes later, I emerge from the closet. When Sloan sees my reflection behind her in the mirror, she smiles. Her bright blue eyes light up even more. “Quinnie, I don’t think I’ve ever seen you look more beautiful, and that’s a feat in itself because you are always the prettiest girl in the room.”

“Okay, chill, babe. I know I’m your second date of the night, but no need to butter me up.” Coming to stand beside her, I give her a little hip bump.

“You are my number one. Liev is the third wheel here,” Sloan says, squeezing my hand. “Too bad that other best friend of yours had a stupid game today or else I know he would have been here with you. You two would have been on the dance floor all night.”

“I know, right… How dare he have to pitch today,” I joke, but deep down, I want him here more than I would like to admit.

“I’m so ready for all of them to be home, honestly. I know spring break was only two months ago, but it feels like forever since I’ve seen Eli. It was so weird only celebrating Maddie on their birthday… it didn’t feel right.”

“Just a few more weeks and we will all be together again… like old times,” I respond, avoiding her comment as guilt seeps in. I was with him on his birthday last week. After making up an elaborate lie about going to meet up with some of my new teammates who I’ll be playing volleyball with at NYU, I drove to Pennsylvania. I may not have met my own teammates, but I got to know a lot of Eli’s, including his roommate, Parker. Dude was intense… tattoos, broody, hot, and unnervingly quiet.

Eli introduced me to all the baseball guys as his best friend. I know they were confused as fuck when he full-on made out with me in front of them, and there is no way Parker didn’t know that we were best friends who participate in extracurriculars because we could barely keep our hands to ourselves from the moment I got there. Yet I haven’t told my best friend… Eli’s sister.Fucking shitty of me.

Maybe it’s because I know how badly she wants that with Wes and here I am having sex with her brother. The brother she thinks is the obstacle standing between her and the guy she has been infatuated with forever.

Both of our moms, along with Mrs. King, barge into the bathroom, interrupting my guilty thoughts.

“Oh, my babies!” my mom screeches.

“You both look so lovely.” Cindy gasps.

Oh hell, they’ve been in the champs.

Lydia already has her phone out, most likely sending updates to Wes.

“I don’t know if we should let your fathers see you. They may not let you guys out of the house,” my mom says, walking over to me, taking my hand and spinning me around. “So beautiful, angel.”

“Thanks, Mom.”
