Me

The fuck man… I decide to surprise everyone and you’re not even here!

Zeus

You’re shitting me.

Me

Nope, but I heard you're still dealing with a shitty situation.

Zeus

Don’t even joke man, it's been a fucking nightmare.

Me

I'm just messing. You still planning on coming up?

Zeus

Hell yeah. I was hoping to get on the road tomorrow morning if all goes well today.

Me

Fingers crossed my man. I’ll talk to you later… good luck with that shit.

Looking up from my phone, I catch my mom walking back outside with a plate piled high with food.

“Come eat, we just finished a little while ago, so I made you a plate,” she says, setting it on the obscenely large picnic-style table. It's a custom-built table that Quinn’s dad and I built at least ten years ago. We realized we never had a table big enough to fit all of us, so we designed and constructed one to fit the needs of the house. Brad has to seal it every few years, but it’s still in great condition.

While eating, the ladies fill me in on the plans for the weekend. Maddie comes to sit beside me on the bench seat.

She leans in and whispers, “He surprised us this morning, showing up with a bag of bagels and a bouquet.”

Fuck. “Is that where she is now?”

She nods, her expression filled with pity. “He took her out for lunch and a drive…”

Well, this certainly throws off my plan a bit, but no matter what, I'm still going to tell her. I have to tell her how I feel. It's like the words are eating me alive, scratching and clawing their way out.

“Thanks,” I say, pulling her in and kissing her head.

Shoving my last bite of food into my mouth, I stand up.

“All right, who wants to go out on the jet skis?” Brayden asks as he comes up the deck stairs.

“Hell yeah. Let’s go,” I say, accepting the distraction while I wait for Q to come back.

“Hey, man! Glad you could make it!” Brayden says, giving me a pound.

“Let me change into my suit and we’ll hit the water,” I say, throwing away my plate.

“Meet me at the boathouse.”
