I throw my hair into a clip and head out of the bathroom, right when I hear her cry change through the monitor.
“Mama…” she whimpers, and my heart stops. I look to Eli to confirm whether I’m hearing things, and he’s stopped dead in his tracks, gaze fixated on the screen as well.
She starts to cry a little louder, and then calls out “Ma-ma” again.
My hand goes to my mouth. “Oh my gosh. Do you think?” My tear-filled eyes question Eli.
His face has a soft smile as he nods. “Yeah, baby… she means you. Without a doubt.”
He grabs my hand as my emotions get the best of me. When we hung out with Katie and Darren the other day, I swore I heard Sophie babble it while we were playing, but I figured it was just because she had heard their kids say it. But knowing they see me as their mama fills me with such an intense pride that I’ve never felt before.
We walk up the stairs and into her room. Sophie is awake, and the minute she sees us, she reaches for me.
“Mama,” she whimpers again. I embrace her in my arms, and she calms at my touch.
“I’m here, sweet angel,” I say, kissing her head.
“I’ll always be here for you.”
