She refused to give him that power. Fuck that.

She texted her dad and brother to let them know she was heading out on the road for a few days.

Alone.

They were surprised but told her to check in every day. Like she needed to do that. She knew there was a tracker on her phone so they could easily find her. She warned them both not to tell anyone where she was at.

Once she was on her bike, her clenched stomach finally released. No matter what, she could always count on her sled and the open road to heal her. Riding was therapy and she loved every minute of it. The wind in her hair, the power in her control.

She was great. She was fine.

She didn’t need Sonny or his love.

What did he know about love anyway? She deserved a man who would proudly claim her and treat her with respect. She had been a fool to think he wanted more than sex.

She drove west, past Airdrie and then Calgary and kept going until she reached Banff and the beautiful Rocky Mountains. Hotels were pricey around the national park, but she found a short-term rental on the outskirts. Since it was Sunday and not high season, she managed to snag a good price for three days.

After stopping to grab some groceries, she made her way to the rental cottage. Heading up the gravel driveway, the log cabin came into view. Avery took a deep breath, enjoying the fresh, pine-scented air.

The tranquility of nature was like a balm to her tired body and aching heart.

After parking her bike, she headed inside. There was a large stone fireplace and an open kitchen. Two bedrooms and bathrooms, and a hot tub on the outdoor deck.

Avery unpacked her groceries and ventured out outside. Sliding into the hot tub, the bubbles melted away her stress. Or some of it.

After a half hour, she headed back inside. After pouring herself a big glass of wine, she set up in the living room. She lit the fireplace and watched the hypnotic flames flicker to life. The days were warmer now, but the night air was still cool.

Reluctantly, she checked her phone again but saw no messages from Sonny.

Rat bastard.

The only message she had was from Rochelle

Rochelle: I heard you took a road trip. Are you okay?

Sonny ghosted me. Told me he’s busy and not sure, AKA get lost. It’s over. So I took off. If he doesn’t want to be with me, that’s okay. I just need a few days to get myself right again and I’ll be back.

I’m sorry, hon. I know that he cares for you, everyone can see it. This is all new to him.

He never promised me anything. It’s my fault for falling, but I’ll be fine. He and l will go back to the way things were. What the hell was I thinking? Sonny is Sonny. His heart is still ice cold.

Not for you. Don’t lose hope. Enjoy the time away, rest up. See you later in the week. Text or call anytime.

Thanks

Avery took another sip of wine as she gazed as the fire, the flames mesmerizing in their intensity. She thought about the last time Sonny had touched her and how he made her feel. The stupid tears that had threatened for hours finally let loose.

Thank God no one was around to see them.

SONNY

He was a complete dickhead.

A stupid fucking idiot who was sitting around in a bar full of strangers instead of being in bed with the woman he loved.

He still couldn’t say the words out loud. But waking up this morning beside Avery felt entirely too natural. Right. Like she was meant to be there. And he wanted to wake up with her every day. If that wasn’t love, what was?
