My foot lands on the break, hard, the car slowing down as I come nearer and get a look at the idiot walking by the road in the middle of the night.

And not just any person.

I’d know that stubborn set of shoulders in a leather jacket anywhere.

Fucking hell.

Bringing the car to a complete stop, I unbuckle my seatbelt and open the door. I slide my foot out just as she turns around to face me, a trace of panic flashing in her blue irises as she looks at me.

“What the fuck, Jade?”

Jade blinks, her eyes narrowing as she tries to focus. In hindsight, I should have probably turned off my headlights so that they wouldn’t blind her, but I was too stunned to find Jade walking down the side of the road all alone in the middle of the night like the lunatic that she is.

Did Jade seem strange to you?Nixon’s earlier words flash in my head, but I push them back, too angry to deal with that now.

“Prescott?”

“Yes, Prescott. Although it could have been some kind of serial killer for all that you know. Are you freaking insane? What were you thinking?”

“It’s not…” she tries to protest, but I’m too riled up to listen to her.

Seriously, this fucking girl will be the death of me.

“Do you have a death wish or something?” I grab her shoulder, giving her a shake. “Somebody could have run you over, or God knows what else might have happened. You shouldn’t—”

“Fuck you, Wentworth,” she hisses, shoving me away. She turns on the balls of her feet, but I grab her wrist before she can take a step, pulling her back to my chest.

Jade tries to struggle out of my hold, but I just tighten my arms around her. I lean down and press my lips to her ear.

“You’re not going anywhere,” I whisper, a strand of her hair tickling my nose.

Securing my hold on her, I lift her and take her to the passenger’s side of my car. My knee protests the extra weight, but I grit my teeth and push through.

“I’m not going anywhere with you,” Jade jabs her finger into my chest as soon as I let her down. “I’m so sick of big, overly opinionated men who think they can boss me around.”

I pull open the door and place my other hand on the roof of my car, effectively caging her in. “Well, tough luck, doll, ‘cause I’m not letting you walk back to campus. So you either get that sweet ass of yours into the car, or I’m going to put you there. Your choice.”

Jade grits her teeth, her eyes throwing daggers at me. “I hate you.”

I just tilt my head to the side. “The feeling’s mutual.”

“I’m quite capable of walking back home on my own.”

Seriously, does she always have to be so stubborn?

“I. Don’t. Fucking. Care,” I repeat, this time slower. Maybe if I talk to her like the toddler she’s trying to be, she’ll finally understand. “Get in the car.”

“I don’t want to!”

“This isn’t some stupid game, Jade. Something could happen to you, and how the fuck could I look your brother in the face knowing I was there, and I left you because you were acting like a stubborn idiot?!” I yell at her, panic and fear making my gut clench as I slam my fisted hand against the metal.

Jade flinches, and a part of me feels bad. A teeny-tiny part that I shove back because the other part? The other part is suffocated by the possibility of everything that could go wrong.

I inhale deeply, trying to calm myself before continuing, my voice softer this time around. “So stop acting like a brat, and let me drive you back to campus.”

Something passes over her face, but she schools her features before I can try to decipher it. “Fine.”

I watch her slide into the car. She grabs the door handle, and pulls the door out of my grasp, shutting it with way more force than necessary.
